Chapter 5 - The Safe RoomThe eastern wall alarm rose to a continuous scream.
Nathan lifted Lily while Rosa secured the twins inside insulated carriers. They moved through the hallway toward the concealed safe room beneath the pantry.
The wall above the code panel displayed an old family photograph.
Elias Mercer stood between Nathan and Sarah beside the unfinished mountain house. Nathan had always believed his father built the place as a refuge.
Now every hidden passage felt like part of someone else’s plan.
Nathan entered the safe-room code.
Rejected.
He tried again.
The system displayed:
FOUNDER AUTHORITY ACTIVE.
Elias’s credential had overridden him.
A dead man had locked Nathan out of his own shelter.
Rosa removed the panel and reached behind the wiring.
“Your father taught me the manual release.”
Nathan stared.
“When?”
“After your mother died.”
“You told me you met him only once.”
“I lied.”
The wall door opened.
Rosa carried the twins inside.
Nathan followed with Lily.
The safe room contained food, water, medical supplies, and an independent radio. Once the door closed, exterior sound vanished.
Nathan faced Rosa.
“Start talking.”
She helped Lily onto the narrow bed.
“I worked at Mercer Dynamics before I became a nurse.”
“In what department?”
“Executive medical security.”
Nathan had never heard of it.
Elias used medical staff to evaluate threats against senior employees and their families. Rosa monitored private recoveries, witness relocations, and emergency identity changes.
The program was called Continuity.
Marcus had been one of its field operatives.
“He worked for my father?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since he was twenty-three.”
“Why didn’t you warn Sarah?”
“I tried. Elias convinced her Marcus had left the program.”
“Elias was dead.”
Rosa looked toward the children.
“I never saw his body.”
The helicopter crash that supposedly killed Elias happened over remote forest. Only partial remains were recovered.
Nathan had identified his father through a wedding ring and dental records supplied by Mercer’s private physician.
Both could have been fabricated.
“What was Marcus ordered to do?”
“Protect Sarah and the future heirs.”
“By forcing her to sign away their trust?”
“That was not the original assignment.”
Continuity began as a genuine family-protection system. Elias feared rivals would target his children after he stepped down from Mercer Dynamics.
Marcus was placed near Sarah to observe and intervene if threats emerged.
Then the program expanded.
Operatives began controlling the people they were assigned to protect.
Emergency guardianships became permanent.
Financial safeguards became private accounts.
Marcus realized he could use Continuity’s legal and security network for himself.
“Why does he still have founder access?” Nathan asked.
“Because someone kept renewing it.”
Elias.
Or another person using his authority.
The safe-room radio activated.
Marcus’s voice filled the chamber.
“You always did need Rosa to open doors for you.”
Nathan looked toward the ceiling speaker.
Marcus had found the hidden frequency.
“You’re inside the house?”
“I’m in the home your father built for the family he trusted.”
“You are not family.”
Marcus laughed.
“That depends on which birth certificate you read.”
The statement made no sense.
Then Nathan opened Sarah’s envelope again.
One birth certificate belonged to Eli.
One belonged to Noah.
A third document was sealed beneath them.
It identified Lily’s biological father.
The name was not Sarah’s deceased first husband, Daniel Bennett.
It was Marcus Vale.
Nathan stared at Lily.
Sarah had told everyone Marcus became Lily’s stepfather when she was four.
The document said he had been present from the beginning.
Rosa read it.
“Sarah may not have known.”
“How could she not know?”
“Continuity controlled fertility clinics, hospital records, and protected births.”
Lily looked between them.
“Is Marcus my daddy?”
Nathan knelt.
“A paper doesn’t decide who gets to hurt you or own you.”
The safe-room screen activated.
Marcus appeared inside the house carrying Sarah’s bloodstained scarf.
“She told you our daughter was someone else’s,” he said. “Ask her why.”
Behind him, Sarah staggered into view with Evelyn’s gun pressed against her back.
Marcus placed one hand on the safe-room door.
