Chapter 1 - THE NAME ON MARCO’S SCREEN Luke had not touched Elena in seven months.

Now he stood over her hospital bed, gently holding her face between trembling hands while sixteen weeks of pregnancy curved beneath the thin blanket.
“Elena… what happened to you?”
She did not answer.
Her cheeks were hollow. Purple bruising surrounded one wrist, and an oxygen tube rested beneath her nose. Every few seconds, the heart monitor delivered a steady electronic beat that felt far too calm for the violence written across her body.
Dr. Bennett stepped beside him with Elena’s chart pressed tightly against her chest.
“She’s sixteen weeks pregnant, dangerously malnourished, and barely stable.”
Luke looked down at Elena’s bruised wrist.
“That baby is mine.”
He did not ask.
The timing was unmistakable. Their last night together had come immediately before Elena vanished from their home and had divorce papers delivered through an attorney she refused to name.
Luke had spent months believing she had chosen to disappear.
Now he wondered whether she had ever been free to choose anything.
Dr. Bennett placed a sealed evidence bag containing Elena’s purse on the bedside cabinet. A folded handwritten envelope protruded from an inner pocket.
“Someone close to her made sure she never received help.”
The front of the envelope carried five words:
For Luke—Trust No One.
His grief hardened into suspicion.
Across the room, Marco’s phone vibrated. Luke’s security chief read the report, then slowly raised his eyes.
“Boss… the person who betrayed her carries your last name.”
Luke turned toward him.
“Which person?”
Marco looked toward the hallway security camera.
“I don’t know yet. Elena was dropped outside the emergency entrance by a vehicle registered to Mercer Family Services.”
Luke’s family foundation owned twenty-seven vehicles.
His mother chaired the board.
His older brother Adrian controlled daily operations.
And Luke remained the legal president, though he had stopped attending meetings after Elena left.
The hospital doors opened.
A nurse entered carrying Elena’s intake belongings. She placed a loose wedding ring beside the evidence bag.
Luke recognized it immediately.
Elena had worn the ring throughout their marriage. She had not returned it with the divorce documents.
He carefully lifted it.
The inner band contained dried blood.
“Was this hers?” he asked.
The nurse nodded. “It was clenched in her fist when paramedics found her.”
Elena’s fingers moved against the sheet.
Luke leaned toward her.
“Elena?”
Her eyelids fluttered.
For one brief moment, she looked directly at him. Terror filled her face before recognition softened it.
Then she whispered:
“They told me you signed it.”
“Signed what?”
Her eyes closed again.
The monitor accelerated.
Dr. Bennett guided Luke backward while nurses checked her oxygen and blood pressure.
Marco opened the hospital security report on his phone.
“The foundation vehicle entered through the service lane,” he said. “The driver knew which camera was offline.”
“Who approved the maintenance?”
Marco swallowed.
“Adrian Mercer.”
Luke stared at the envelope in his hand.

His own brother’s name was the first one beneath the warning.
👉 Elena had survived long enough to reach Luke, but the Mercer vehicle and the disabled camera pointed directly toward his family.
