Chapter 14 - THE CHILD IN THE SEALED FILE Caroline’s clinic contained a locked archive labeled CONTINUITY BIRTHS.

The records documented pregnancies involving Mercer executives and women whose assets had been absorbed into the company.

Most files were incomplete.

One contained a live birth certificate from eleven years earlier.

The mother’s name was hidden.

The father was listed as Adrian Mercer.

Adrian had a child.

Neither Luke nor Evelyn knew.

The infant disappeared from public records after three weeks. Caroline’s notes claimed the child died from respiratory failure, but no death certificate existed.

The confidential trust created for that child remained active.

Adrian’s firstborn had already triggered an audit eleven years earlier.

Someone suppressed it.

That explained how Adrian learned which clauses would activate during Elena’s pregnancy.

He had watched the system respond once before.

Detective Mara confronted him.

Adrian refused to name the mother or reveal what happened to the child.

“You imprisoned Elena because you knew the audit process,” Mara said.

“I protected the only structure keeping Mercer Industries intact.”

“You stole from it.”

“I took what the company owed me.”

“What happened to your child?”

Adrian looked toward the interrogation-room camera.

“My child became leverage.”

“For whom?”

He said nothing else.

Marco traced the active trust’s maintenance payments to a private boarding school in Colorado. A student there had tuition, medical expenses, and security funded through anonymous Mercer accounts.

Eleven-year-old Samuel Reed.

His photograph resembled Adrian.

Luke felt no affection for his brother, but the child was not responsible for any of it.

“We protect him,” Elena said from the hospital bed.

“You don’t owe Adrian anything.”

“I’m not doing it for Adrian.”

The school reported Samuel missing before federal agents arrived.

A woman using Evelyn’s credentials signed him out two days earlier.

Evelyn was already under police supervision.

Once again, someone had copied a Mercer identity.

The vehicle that collected Samuel belonged to Caroline’s clinic.

Caroline claimed the access had been stolen.

Adrian laughed when informed.

“You arrested everyone who understood the system.”

“Who took him?” Mara demanded.

“The person who designed continuity.”

“Your father?”

“He funded it.”

“Caroline?”

“She maintained it.”

“Evelyn?”

“She legitimized it.”

“Then who designed it?”

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

“Ask Marco.”

At the hospital, Luke turned toward his security chief.

Marco did not appear surprised.

“My father built the first Mercer protection systems,” he said.

“You never told me.”

“I didn’t know they became medical-containment programs.”

“Did your father work with Caroline?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

Luke had heard that word too many times in connection with missing records.

Marco opened an encrypted archive his father left him. He had never possessed the password.

The phrase inside Elena’s original envelope unlocked it:

Trust No One.

The first file was a map.

A location in the Arizona desert.

Beside it were two current photographs.

Samuel Reed.

And Lydia Mercer.
