Chapter 4 - EVELYN MERCER ARRIVES Evelyn reached the hospital before the police contacted her.

She walked into the private corridor flanked by two family attorneys and demanded immediate access to Elena.

Luke blocked the security doors.

“You are not going near her.”

His mother stopped.

“You have heard one frightened version of a complicated situation.”

“I watched you explain why a locked room was necessary.”

Evelyn’s composure cracked for less than a second.

“Elena was under medical supervision.”

“She was starving.”

“She refused food.”

“She was drugged.”

“I did not authorize that.”

Luke held up a printed image of the keypad.

“You authorized the doors.”

Evelyn looked toward Marco.

“You work for the Mercer family. Remove my son from the corridor.”

Marco remained still.

“I work for Luke.”

“You were hired by his father.”

“And instructed to protect Luke’s household from any threat.”

Marco’s gaze hardened.

“Including threats carrying his surname.”

Evelyn turned back to Luke.

“Adrian told me Elena had suffered a breakdown after discovering the pregnancy. He showed me messages from you agreeing that she needed private care.”

“I sent no messages.”

“He showed me your authorization.”

“Forged.”

For the first time, uncertainty entered Evelyn’s face.

Luke did not let it become an excuse.

“You saw her ask for a phone. You saw the locked door. You knew she wanted to leave.”

“I believed she would expose the company during a vulnerable period.”

“So you chose the company.”

“I chose to prevent panic.”

“You chose Adrian.”

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Your brother said the audit would destroy thousands of jobs.”

“His theft would destroy them.”

A hospital security officer approached with Detective Mara Shaw, who had taken jurisdiction over the assault and unlawful-confinement investigation.

Mara requested Evelyn’s phone.

The attorneys objected.

Luke handed the detective a copy of Elena’s letter and the videos.

The objection ended when Mara mentioned a warrant.

Evelyn’s messages showed daily contact with Adrian, but several conversations had disappeared. One intact exchange occurred the morning Elena escaped.

EVELYN: She is too weak. Call a real hospital.

ADRIAN: If she reaches Luke, we lose everything.

EVELYN: I did not agree to her death.

ADRIAN: Then keep her quiet until twenty weeks passes without a viable pregnancy.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

“I never saw that reply.”

The message had been marked as read from her phone.

Someone else had accessed it.

Mara found a hidden administrative profile installed by Mercer Family Services. It allowed remote control of Evelyn’s messages, microphone, and location.

Adrian had monitored his own mother while using her authority.

Evelyn sat down slowly.

Luke felt no satisfaction.

“You helped him build the room he used against you.”

A nurse emerged from Elena’s room.

“She’s asking for Luke.”

When he entered, Elena held the loose wedding ring.

“I kept it because I needed to remember something real,” she whispered.

Luke sat beside her.

“What happened before you reached the hospital?”

“A woman opened the blue-room door. She said Adrian wanted me moved.”

“Celeste?”

“I never saw her face.”

“What did you see?”

Elena turned the ring in her fingers.

“She had the same scar as your mother.”

Evelyn had a narrow burn scar across her left palm.

Her younger sister, Lydia Mercer, carried the same scar from the childhood fire that injured them both.

Lydia had disappeared from family life fifteen years earlier after accusing Evelyn of stealing from their father.

Luke had been told she died overseas.
