Elena listened while attorneys explained her power.

“Do you want me to step out too?” Luke asked.
“No.”
He sat across from her.

“I believed the video.”
“I know.”
“I believed you said the baby would ruin everything.”

“I called Marco. Your voice answered later and told me to disappear.”
“Rachel copied us.”
“I know that now.”
She looked directly into his eyes.

Luke did not defend himself.
He had spent years allowing Adrian to control family business. He ignored Evelyn’s intrusions because confrontation was exhausting. He allowed security systems to monitor the home without asking what access they gave his relatives.
He never harmed Elena.
But he had built a life in which other Mercers could reach her more easily than she could reach him.
“I made the family too present in our marriage,” he said.
“Yes.”
“I believed distance from their business meant it could not touch us.”
“It touched everything.”
Luke nodded.
“I cannot ask you to trust me because the truth finally favors me.”
Elena’s expression softened, though grief remained.
“No.”
“What do you want?”
“To make every decision about my medical care.”
“You will.”
“To control my father’s company.”
“You should.”
“To decide later whether our marriage is truly over.”
Luke looked toward the ring.
“I’ll wait for your decision.”
“This isn’t a promise to come back.”
“I know.”
Elena placed the ring inside the evidence bag.
For now, it belonged to the case.
Dr. Bennett entered with the latest ultrasound. The baby’s heart remained strong. Elena needed nutrition, rest, and careful monitoring, but the immediate danger had eased.
Luke allowed himself one relieved breath.
Detective Mara then delivered the warrant returns from Caroline’s clinic.
Police found medical records for seven other women connected to Mercer executives. Each had been isolated during pregnancy under the private maternal program.
Some pregnancies ended.
Some children were born and entered confidential trusts.
The program had existed before Adrian gained control.

Luke answered.
