Chapter 10 - THE LETTER FROM LUKE’S FATHER Luke returned to the hospital with the sealed letter.
He did not open it.
“It belongs to you,” he told Elena.
She studied the handwriting.
“I’ve seen this before.”
“Where?”
“My father kept envelopes with the same seal in his office.”
Elena’s father died when she was twenty. He owned a small biomedical engineering company that Mercer Industries acquired shortly afterward.
She had always been told the acquisition prevented bankruptcy.
The letter revealed another truth.
Luke’s father and Elena’s father jointly developed a medical-patent portfolio worth hundreds of millions. Mercer Industries absorbed the patents after Elena’s father died, but half the beneficial ownership should have passed to Elena.
Instead, Adrian and Evelyn buried the agreement.
Luke’s father discovered the concealment too late. He created the succession trust to return control indirectly if Luke and Elena ever had a child.
He had hoped the families would reconcile through legitimate business.
He had also written a warning:
If Elena becomes connected to Luke, Adrian may see both of them as a threat. Evelyn will call secrecy protection. Do not allow either of them to decide what Elena is permitted to know.
Luke closed his eyes.
His father had predicted the exact language Evelyn later used.
Elena continued reading.
The letter included a private key to access the original patent ledger. The key was not digital.
It was engraved inside a wedding ring designed years earlier and held by Elena’s father.
The loose ring in the evidence bag was not merely a symbol of marriage.
It contained the access code to her stolen inheritance.
“Your father gave you the ring?” Luke asked.
“No. You did.”
Luke remembered selecting it from a private Mercer jeweler after Adrian recommended the design.
Adrian had unknowingly—or deliberately—placed the ledger key on Elena’s hand.
Perhaps he assumed no one knew what the engraving meant.
The code opened an archive showing that Elena personally owned a significant portion of the medical division Adrian had used to create the secret clinic.
The blue-room operation had been financed through assets stolen from her.
Dr. Bennett reviewed the patent list.
Several devices involved maternal monitoring and controlled drug delivery. Adrian used Elena’s inherited technology to watch and medicate her.
The cruelty was almost too precise to absorb.
Elena looked toward Luke.
“Did you know any of this?”
“No.”
“I need the answer to stay no.”
“It will.”
She placed the ring on the bedside cabinet rather than returning it to her finger.
Their marriage had been dismantled through lies, but truth did not automatically rebuild it.
Luke understood.
Detective Mara entered with news.
Evelyn had agreed to testify fully against Adrian and Rachel in exchange for consideration during sentencing. She offered access to hidden records and admitted helping isolate Elena.
“She wants to see me?” Elena asked.
“Yes.”
“No.”
The answer came without hesitation.
Mara nodded.
“Then she will not.”
Elena’s hand moved toward her stomach.
The monitor remained steady.
A nurse entered with fresh flowers delivered from the Mercer estate.
Dr. Bennett stopped her before she reached the bed.
“No outside deliveries.”
Security opened the bouquet.
Inside the stems was a narrow glass vial containing the same appetite suppressant found in Elena’s blood.
The attached card carried no name.

The audit does not protect the pregnancy.
