Chapter 8 - EVELYN’S FIRST BLUE ROOM Evelyn denied creating the system.

Then Marco found an architectural plan dated twenty-six years earlier.

The Mercer estate once contained three windowless recovery rooms beneath its private clinic. Family members suffering addiction, psychological crises, or public scandals were placed there without outside records.

The rooms were painted blue because Evelyn believed the color calmed patients.

Luke looked at his mother.

“You locked people away.”

“My father did.”

“You managed the clinic after he became ill.”

“I tried to close it.”

“But you kept the methods.”

Evelyn admitted using one room years earlier after Lydia threatened to expose illegal transfers from the family trust. Physicians declared Lydia unstable, and Graham—no, different story. Use family attorney then. Rachel’s father, Jonathan Price, arranged her commitment.

Rachel had inherited her father’s files.

Adrian discovered them.

Together, they rebuilt the blue-room system around Elena.

“Why did Lydia help Elena escape?” Luke asked.

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“Because she knew what it meant to be erased.”

Lydia contacted Detective Mara from a secure federal office.

She had surrendered voluntarily after confirming Elena reached the hospital alive.

Through video, she told Luke what happened.

Adrian located her five years earlier and offered access to the Mercer clinic archives in exchange for medical assistance. Lydia pretended to cooperate because she wanted proof of what Evelyn and their father had done.

When Elena arrived, Lydia recognized the same methods.

Isolation.

Forged psychiatric reports.

Controlled medication.

Family members told the captive that no one outside cared.

Lydia began replacing sedatives with harmless tablets and leaving extra food.

“That is why Elena survived as long as she did,” Dr. Bennett said.

Lydia eventually opened the door, carried Elena through a service tunnel, and drove her to the hospital.

“Why not call police?” Luke demanded.

“Adrian monitored emergency networks. I feared he would intercept us before I could move her.”

“Why leave?”

“Because Rachel was following.”

Lydia abandoned the foundation vehicle near the hospital and escaped on foot.

She believed Rachel entered the hospital using her face.

Celeste confirmed that Adrian paid Rachel to create disguises and false records. Celeste assisted with financial documents and surveillance, but she denied touching Elena’s medication.

“Why help him at all?” Mara asked.

“He said the audit would expose debts that would send us both to prison.”

“You chose yourself.”

“Yes.”

No one offered forgiveness.

The MONEY folder showed Celeste had approved shell-company transfers and falsified foundation expenses. She had not invented the confinement, but she profited from the same system.

Luke sat beside Elena after the interviews.

“I grew up thinking Mercer security kept danger outside.”

Elena looked toward the camera above the door.

“It kept secrets inside.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Stop asking what the family needs.”

He nodded.

“What do you need?”

“For no one to make another decision for me.”

Luke moved his chair farther from the bed, giving her space.

“The police want to move you to a protected room.”

“Do you trust it?”

“No.”

“Neither do I.”

Dr. Bennett entered carrying updated results.

Elena’s nutritional markers had improved, but a new ultrasound revealed early stress around the placenta.

“The baby remains alive,” she said. “But the next seventy-two hours matter.”

At that moment, Luke’s phone received a message from Adrian.

A photograph showed the original Mercer succession trust burning inside a metal container.
