Chapter 9 - THE TRUST UNDER THE CHAPE LLuke did not go alone.
Marco placed a tracker inside Luke’s coat and coordinated with Detective Mara from an unmarked vehicle. Adrian’s message led them to a decommissioned chapel on Mercer land.
The chapel had hosted family weddings, baptisms, and funerals for generations.
Beneath its altar was the private archive Luke’s father built before his death.
Adrian stood beside a metal barrel filled with burning documents.
“You brought security.”
“You expected me to.”
Adrian smiled.
“You always need someone else to see danger first.”
Luke looked toward the fire.
“You imprisoned Elena.”
“I protected the company.”
“You poisoned her.”
“I controlled the pregnancy timeline.”
“You almost killed both of them.”
“That was not the objective.”
Luke struck him.
The blow sent Adrian against the altar.
Marco and Mara entered before Luke could hit him again.
Adrian laughed through the blood on his lip.
“Perfect. Angry husband attacks the brother who exposed his unstable wife.”
Mara handcuffed him.
“The hospital audio, blue-room videos, forged records, and your wife’s testimony create a different story.”
Adrian’s confidence weakened.
Police extinguished the barrel. Most papers inside were copies.
The original succession trust remained sealed beneath the chapel floor.
Luke’s father had anticipated that an executive might try to destroy it. Only Luke’s fingerprint and the heartbeat of a verified biological descendant could open the vault.
The unborn child’s medical heartbeat recording satisfied the second condition.
When the vault opened, they found the original trust and an explanatory letter.
Luke’s first biological child would receive thirty-one percent of Mercer Industries at birth. At twenty weeks of pregnancy, an independent audit would begin to protect the child’s future interest.
Adrian’s theft would have been uncovered.
But another clause mattered more.
If any family member attempted to harm, conceal, or legally erase the unborn heir, their shares automatically transferred into the child’s trust.
Adrian had not only failed to stop the inheritance.
He had increased it.
The baby now stood to control more than half the company.
Adrian stared at the clause.
“Our father never told me.”
“He knew you would behave differently if you knew the consequences,” Luke said.
The audit began immediately when police submitted evidence of coercion.
Account after account froze.
The Mercer Family Services vehicles stopped accepting remote commands.
Rachel’s legal network lost access.
Evelyn’s board authority was suspended.
Adrian faced charges for conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, poisoning, evidence tampering, and attempted obstruction.
For the first time, Luke believed the machine surrounding Elena might finally stop.
Then Marco opened a sealed envelope from the vault.
It had been addressed to Elena years before Luke met her.
Luke’s father had written her full maiden name across the front.
“How did he know Elena?” Luke asked.
Marco examined the date.
“This was written when she was nineteen.”
