Chapter 2 - THE LETTER ELENA EXPECTED HIM TO FIND Dr. Bennett refused to let Luke open the envelope until hospital security photographed it.

“Anything inside may become evidence,” she said.

Luke waited while a nurse placed the envelope beneath a document camera. The paper showed no visible tampering, though one corner carried a faint brown stain.

When they finally opened it, Elena’s handwriting began neatly and deteriorated across each page.

Luke, I did not leave because I stopped loving you.

He stopped reading.

Marco stood near the door, saying nothing.

Luke forced himself onward.

Elena wrote that she received a video three days before filing for divorce. In it, Luke appeared to tell Adrian that their marriage had become an obstacle and that Elena’s future pregnancy would “complicate the Mercer succession.”

The face was Luke’s.

The voice was Luke’s.

The words were not.

She confronted no one because the video arrived with photographs proving someone had followed her to work, the pharmacy, and Dr. Bennett’s clinic.

The accompanying message warned:

Leave quietly, or Luke will lose more than a wife.

Elena believed the threat referred to Luke’s life.

She signed divorce papers and moved into an apartment arranged by Luke’s mother, Evelyn Mercer, who promised to protect her from the family scandal.

Two weeks later, Elena discovered she was pregnant.

She tried to call Luke.

Her phone stopped working.

The apartment doors began locking from the outside.

The next lines were uneven.

Adrian says the baby cannot reach twenty weeks. He says your father designed the trust wrong. Your mother says she is protecting everyone. I don’t know who knows what.

Luke lowered the letter.

“She was imprisoned.”

Marco’s jaw tightened. “In a property owned by the foundation.”

The letter described a blue bedroom without windows, meals that made Elena dizzy, and medical visits conducted by people who refused to show identification. She wrote that one woman repeatedly told her she was too unstable to contact Luke.

Elena had hidden the letter inside the purse lining after realizing her room was searched every night.

The final paragraph contained only three sentences:

Adrian controls the cameras. Evelyn controls the doors. Someone else controls them both. Trust no one who says this was done for the family.

Luke looked toward the evidence bag.

“What else was in the purse?”

A technician examined the torn lining and discovered a thin memory card taped beneath the seam.

Marco exhaled sharply.

“Elena got evidence out.”

The card required a password.

On its label, Elena had written:

The day we stopped pretending.

Luke knew the date.

It was the night he and Elena first admitted they were in love—after a Mercer charity gala where both had spent hours pretending they felt nothing.

He entered the six digits.

Three folders appeared.

HOUSE

MONEY

BABY

Before Luke could open the first, the room’s security camera rotated toward the bed.

Marco noticed.

“That camera isn’t supposed to move.”

The lens tilted downward, focusing on the memory card.

Then the monitor beside Elena’s bed displayed a connection warning.

Someone outside the hospital was attempting to access the device.

Marco disconnected the room from the network.

The camera stopped.

A message remained frozen on the screen:

👉 Elena had smuggled out three evidence folders, and someone was still watching closely enough to know the moment Luke opened them.
