Chapter 11 - THE FLOWERS FROM A LOCKED ESTATE The flowers had left the Mercer estate after Adrian’s arrest.
The delivery order used Evelyn’s suspended account and Luke’s biometric approval. Neither authorization should have worked.
Marco traced the florist request to a backup security server Adrian had hidden inside the family chapel.
The server remained connected through a private satellite system.
Someone had accessed it remotely.
Rachel was in custody.
Celeste was under guard.
Lydia remained protected by federal agents.
Evelyn’s movements were restricted.
One major participant was still missing: Dr. Caroline Mercer, Adrian and Luke’s cousin.
Caroline served as medical director for Mercer Family Services before resigning two years earlier. She had access to the drugs, clinic records, and family security systems.
Luke had not seen her since his father’s funeral.
Evelyn initially denied Caroline’s involvement.
Then Detective Mara showed her the vial.
Evelyn looked away.
“Caroline designed the private maternal program.”
“For Elena?” Luke asked.
“For future Mercer pregnancies.”
Luke stared at his mother.
The program began years earlier as a confidential medical service for family members who feared kidnapping, extortion, or public exposure. Caroline created secure rooms, private records, and alternative identities.
Adrian converted it into imprisonment.
But Caroline maintained the drug supplies and monitoring systems.
“Did she know what he was doing?” Mara asked.
“She knew Elena was being supervised.”
“Did she know Elena wanted to leave?”
Evelyn did not answer.
Caroline’s former residence had been empty for months. Payments from Adrian’s shell companies went to a private clinic outside Tucson.
Police found abandoned medical rooms, a duplicate blue bedroom, and printed copies of Elena’s hospital chart.
Someone had continued planning after her escape.
One file was labeled:
TRANSFER AFTER STABILIZATION
It described removing Elena from the hospital under a forged court order and placing her in a “maternal recovery environment.”
The proposed facility belonged to Caroline.
Another page instructed staff to preserve the pregnancy until twenty weeks, then challenge the child’s legal status using confidential medical records.
Adrian had attempted to prevent the audit.
Caroline intended to control what happened after it began.
“What legal status?” Luke asked.
The file included an allegation that Elena had undergone fertility treatment and that the embryo belonged to the Mercer family trust.
The claim was false.
But Caroline had forged clinic records capable of supporting it.
If filed, the dispute could allow a court-appointed guardian to control Elena’s medical decisions and the unborn child’s future shares.
Elena listened from the bed, expression empty with exhaustion.
“They are still trying to turn my body into company property.”
Luke stood beside her without touching.
“They won’t.”
“You said that once about the marriage.”
He accepted the wound.
“I know.”
Marco’s phone vibrated.
Caroline had just used her medical credentials at the hospital’s secure parking level.
She had entered the building wearing a federal transfer badge.
The security doors locked automatically.
