Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT OF THE BROKEN ARMThe argument started because I found a certified-mail notice from the lender.

Final request for signature verification.

I put it on the kitchen island.

“What is this?”

Derek was pouring wine.

He looked.

“Nothing.”

“Why is a bank asking me to verify a home-equity line?”

“I told you about it.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“Show me.”

He became angry because I would not accept memory as evidence.

Then he said:

“We needed liquidity.”

“We?”

“Our household.”

“For your investments.”

“They’re our investments.”

“I don’t own those entities.”

“We’re married.”

That sentence frightened me.

Not because marriage does not share money.

Because he was using marriage to eliminate consent.

I said:

“I’m calling the bank tomorrow.”

His face changed.

“No.”

“What?”

“Give me a week.”

“No.”

“Lena.”

“No.”

He grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

He grabbed harder.

I slapped his chest with my free hand.

He twisted my left arm backward.

Pain.

I screamed.

Then he shoved me against the stone vanity edge between kitchen and powder-room corridor? Actually bathroom later.

The impact broke my arm.

I did not know it yet.

I only knew pain.

I ran to the bedroom.

He followed.

I reached the bathroom.

Locked it.

He started breaking the door.

That was the whole sequence.

No secret assassination plot.

A financial lie exposed.

A controlling man faced with the word no.

Violence escalating in seconds.

Terrible enough.
