Chapter 7 - THE FIRST TIME HE HURT METhe bathroom was not the first time.

It was the first time I called it violence immediately.
Nine months earlier, Derek grabbed my upper arms during an argument about money.
Hard.
I had bruises the next day.
He apologized.
Then said:
“You know how impossible you get.”
I accepted both statements.
Six months earlier, he punched a kitchen cabinet beside my head.
Not me.
The cabinet.
I said that sentence repeatedly.
Three months earlier, he blocked the bedroom door for twenty minutes while we argued.
No hitting.
Just:
“You’re not walking away from this conversation.”
I eventually sat down because escape felt more exhausting than compliance.
Each event had a different explanation.
Stress.
Wine.
Money.
My tone.
His father’s illness.
Work.
The apartment renovation.
Nothing by itself became:
My husband is dangerous.
That is how thresholds move.
May you like
Millimeter by millimeter.
Until one night you are on a bathroom floor whispering into a number you promised your dead mother you would never need.
