Chapter 26 - TWO YEARS LATERTwo years after Derek broke my arm, Vincent invited me to his sixtieth birthday dinner.

I almost refused.
Then went.
Not a mob banquet.
Twenty-two people in the private room of Belladonna.
Family.
Lawyers.
Business associates.
People whose biographies I intentionally did not research before dessert.
Vincent gave a toast.
He did not mention my bathroom.
Thank God.
After dinner, he walked me outside.
“You happy?”
“Sometimes.”
“Good.”
I looked at him.
“You know you didn’t save my life.”
His eyebrow rose.
“I called police.”
“Yes.”
“You arrived.”
“Yes.”
“You stopped Derek from getting closer.”
“Yes.”
“But the thing that saved me was getting out of that marriage.”
Vincent nodded.
“I know.”
That surprised me.
Then:
“You gave me six minutes.”
He looked toward the street.
“You survived them.”
Correct.
Not:
I saved you.
May you like
I survived them.
That mattered.
