Chapter 12 - THE AUDIOOne recording mattered.

It came from my second phone.
New York allows a participant to record her own conversation without the other participant’s permission.
I had checked with counsel before doing it.
The recording was ten days before the bruises.
Julian:
“Your refusal to sell is not rational.”
Me:
“I don’t want to sell.”
“You keep saying that like it ends the conversation.”
“It ends my consent.”
Pause.
Then:
“We are married. Your property decisions affect me.”
“Of course they affect you.”
“So I get a say.”
“A say. Not ownership.”
Then Julian:
“If you force me into a corner, you’re going to regret how ugly this gets.”
Not a death threat.
Not even an explicit violence threat.
Still relevant.
Then Eleanor’s voice.
She had entered the kitchen unexpectedly.
“Julian.”
He stopped.
Eleanor said:
“Audrey, why are you making him beg?”
That hurt in a different way.
She knew about the sale pressure.
Not the full debt.
May you like
Maybe.
But she knew enough to frame my no as cruelty.
