Chapter 5 - WHY I BOUGHT THE SECOND PHONENineteen days before the makeup bag, I found a browser notification.

Nothing dramatic.
Our shared laptop.
An email preview.
Loan modification requires property owner acknowledgment.
I clicked.
The email vanished.
Not disappeared from the inbox.
The account refreshed and logged me out.
Julian had remote access through his phone.
Maybe coincidence.
I asked him that evening:
“Are you refinancing something?”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“What loan modification?”
He stared at me too long.
“Work.”
Julian was a partner in a boutique commercial-interiors firm.
Office renovations.
Restaurants.
High-end retail.
His business had been uneven after a major client bankruptcy.
Still, “work” was plausible.
I let it go.
Then two days later I found a letter in the recycling bin.
From a lender.
My townhouse address.
Language about collateral verification.
I photographed it.
Julian caught me.
His reaction was immediate.
“Why are you going through my mail?”
“It has my address on it.”
“It’s business.”
“It says collateral.”
“You don’t understand commercial lending.”
I hated that phrase.
You don’t understand.
He had begun using it more often.
Money.
Contracts.
Taxes.
Property.
Our marriage had developed subjects I was apparently too emotional or too unsophisticated to discuss.
That night, I bought the second phone.
I told no one except my father.
Even Dad did not know everything yet.
He told me:

“Document. Don’t provoke. Talk to counsel.”
I started doing exactly that.
