Chapter 17 - MY FATHER AND THE FOLDERDad had not always been the father I called first.

When I was twenty-three, I nearly married a man he disliked.
Dad investigated him without telling me.
Public records.
Business lawsuits.
Divorce filings.
I found out.
We did not speak for four months.
“You don’t trust my judgment.”
Dad said:
“I trust documents.”
“Same problem.”
Years later, he apologized.
Not for checking public records.
For doing it secretly.
He told me:
“Concern does not create authority over your life.”
I remembered that when he arrived after my call.
He did not say:
Come home forever.
He said:
“What do you want?”
I said:
“I want out safely.”
So he helped me leave.
Not take over.
That difference is why I could accept his help.
Julian used protection as permission.

Dad learned protection required consent.
It took both men years to understand different versions of the same lesson.
