Chapter 18 - Grant’s Apology
Grant’s first apology to Noah happened in therapy.
No cameras.
No lawyers.
He said:
“I wanted you to be tougher.”
Noah frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I thought being afraid meant I had failed as your dad.”
That was honest.
Then:
“I asked Logan to push you.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
Grant continued:
“I did not tell him to punch you.”
True.
“But I created the situation where he thought hurting you was part of the lesson.”
Good.
Then:
“When he hit you, I should have run to you.”
Noah whispered:
“You smiled.”
Grant broke.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Long pause.
“Because I thought Mom would finally react the way I had told everyone she would.”
Noah stared.
“So you wanted Mom bad.”
Grant cried.
“I wanted evidence that made my plan easier.”
“Texas?”
“Yes.”
Noah looked down.
“I didn’t want Texas.”
“I know now.”
“I told you.”
Grant’s face collapsed further.
“Yes.”
That was worse.
Noah had told him.
Grant had decided child’s preference was a barrier, not information.
Then Noah said:
“I’m done.”
