Chapter 2 - The Doctor and the Deputy
Noah’s injuries were minor.
That sentence mattered legally.
It did not make the act minor.
Bruise along left cheek.
Small abrasion at the shoulder.
No broken tooth.
No eye injury.
No loss of consciousness.
No evidence of concussion during the initial observation period.
The doctor wrote:
STRUCK BY ADULT FAMILY MEMBER.
Then:
Child visibly anxious when discussing return to father’s residence.
That line made my stomach twist.
Noah loved Grant.
He was frightened by what Grant had allowed.
Both could exist.
The clinic made a mandated report.
Police had already been contacted by neighbors.
A deputy met us.
He did not conduct a detailed forensic interview with Noah at midnight.
Good.
He asked only immediate safety questions.
“Who hit you?”
“Logan.”
“Did anybody else hit you?”
“No.”
“Are you afraid to go home with Mom?”
“No.”
“Dad?”
Noah looked at me.
Then:
“Tonight.”
The deputy wrote.
Then me.
“Did you strike Logan?”
“No.”
“Did you physically restrain him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He attacked me twice after punching Noah.”
“Did you continue after he stopped?”
“No.”
Videos later supported that.
No battery charge against me.
No diversion.
No apologizing for a defensive action that ended when the danger ended.
That distinction mattered.
Then Grant.
He gave a statement separately.
His version:
He wanted Logan to teach Noah confidence.
He did not authorize a punch.
He expected verbal pressure and light sparring only if Noah agreed.
Noah had not agreed to spar.
That problem remained.
Then:
Why neighbors recording?
Because Grant feared Claire might react “militarily.”
That word appeared in the report.
Then:
Why not intervene when Logan punched Noah?
Grant said he froze.
Video showed a smile first.
The deputy noticed too.
Then Logan.
He admitted striking Noah.
Why?
“Teaching him.”
Did he intend injury?
“No.”
Did Grant ask?
“He said push him.”
Physical push or emotional?
Logan said:
“Both, kind of.”
Not enough yet.
Then police separated everyone.
Temporary agreement:
No Logan contact with Noah.
Grant would not exercise overnight parenting until child services reviewed.
Not a permanent court order.
Grant agreed under attorney advice.
That was something.
At 2:11 a.m., he texted:
I never wanted Noah hurt.
May you like
I did not answer.
Because wanting no injury while arranging fear is not the same as protecting a child.
