Chapter 21 - Grant Testifies
Grant admitted more than his lawyer wanted.
Maybe because lying had become exhausting.
He said:
“I felt erased.”
By whom?
“My wife’s career.”
Then:
“For years I was the parent who stayed.”
True.
“She deployed. I adjusted.”
True.
“When Dallas came, I thought she owed me the same.”
There.
The emotional center.
Not law.
Debt.
He had turned marriage into ledger.
Then:
“I knew ordinary relocation litigation might keep Noah in Colorado.”
“So?”
“I wanted the court to understand what Claire could be like under pressure.”
“By creating pressure?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Using Noah?”
Grant cried.
“Yes.”
The judge asked:
“When Logan struck Noah, why did you not intervene?”
Grant took almost thirty seconds.
“Because I thought the evidence would be stronger if Claire did.”
There.
No legal language could improve it.
The judge looked down.
Wrote something.
Then Grant said:
“I’m ashamed.”
