Chapter 7 - Logan’s Gym

Logan trained at a legitimate MMA gym.
His coach, Devin Marsh, was horrified.
“He hit a seven-year-old?”
“Yes.”
“He told me it was family conditioning.”
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?”
“Grant had asked whether controlled pressure can help kids stop freezing.”
Devin told him:
Age-appropriate martial arts classes can build confidence.
Structured.
Consent.
Protective gear.
Coach supervision.
No adult striking child.
He specifically said:
“Do not spar a seven-year-old.”
Good.
Then Logan asked:
“What about teaching him to take a shove?”
Devin said:
“In class, maybe with pads and instructors.”
Again.
Not:
Punch your brother in the street.
Then Grant attended one session.
Observed youth class.
He liked:
Kids bow.
Follow instructions.
Stand after falling.
He did not like:
Instructor stopped immediately when child cried.
He told Logan later:
“They baby them too.”
There.
Grant did not want resilience.
May you like
He wanted absence of visible fear.
Different.
