Chapter 26 - Strength

By eleven, Noah took jiu-jitsu.
His idea.
I almost said no.
Then realized the irony.
We found a gym with strong youth-safety policies.
Coach Ana.
First rule:
Tap means stop.
Immediately.
No shame.
No “finish the round.”
Tap.
Stop.
Noah loved it.
Not because he wanted to fight Logan.
Because chess with bodies appealed to him.
Grant came to one tournament in Colorado.
Sat three seats away from me.
Noah lost first match.
He cried.
Grant’s body shifted.
Old instinct.
Then he stayed seated.
Coach Ana crouched with Noah.
“You want five minutes or want to talk match?”
“Five.”
“Okay.”
Five minutes later:
He watched another match.
No one told him to toughen up.
Grant whispered:
“I used to think that was making him softer.”
I said:
“I know.”
“He came back.”
“Yes.”
“He didn’t need somebody to hit him.”
“No.”
May you like
Grant looked down.
No more needed.
