Chapter 4 - What Greer knew

Greer gave her statement the next morning.

Then she asked to speak to me with my attorney present.

I almost told her no.

Part of me wanted to blame somebody immediately, and Greer was available.

My attorney, Lena Brooks, said:

“Listen before deciding.”

So I listened.

Greer had worked for us eighteen months.

Four days a week.

Cleaning.

Laundry.

Light cooking.

Some school pickup when scheduled.

Not Pippa’s nanny.

Not responsible overnight.

The first time she saw Pippa in the kennel was eleven weeks earlier.

I had been in Denver.

Camilla told Greer:

“Beckett approved a consequence space because Pippa keeps leaving her bedroom after bedtime.”

Greer believed her.

Why?

Because Camilla was my wife.

Because I traveled.

Because parents create rules employees do not always understand.

The kennel door was open that afternoon.

Pippa sat inside with coloring books.

Greer thought it was bizarre.

But not necessarily abuse.

The second time was worse.

The door was locked.

Pippa was crying.

Greer confronted Camilla.

Camilla said:

“She is staying there until she stops screaming.”

“How long?”

“Twenty minutes.”

Greer waited.

Camilla unlocked it after seventeen.

Greer remembered because she timed it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Greer’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought you knew.”

“When did you stop thinking that?”

Silence.

Then:

My voice changed.

“And you still said nothing?”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Her failure.

She did not hide from it.
