Chapter 8 - The first night

The forensic child interview established the first overnight confinement.

Seven weeks before I came home early.

I had flown to Boston.

Pippa refused to sleep because of a thunderstorm.

She entered Camilla’s bedroom twice.

Camilla returned her to bed.

Third time, Pippa started crying.

Camilla said:

“If you want to behave like a puppy following people around, you can sleep where puppies sleep.”

Pippa thought it was a threat.

Then Camilla took her outside.

The kennel already had the rubber mat.

She added the star blanket.

Pillow.

Closed the door.

Locked it.

Weather records later showed the overnight temperature remained around sixty-four degrees.

Not freezing.

Not extreme heat.

That mattered medically.

It did not make confinement acceptable.

Pippa slept outside approximately two hours before Greer—who had stayed late after a dinner event—found her.

Greer persuaded Camilla to bring her inside.

That was the first overnight.

Not the last.
