Chapter 12 - The Basement ArchiveThe twin-delivery record was not available in the local files.

Walter had removed the physical copy and downloaded the encrypted backup.
Only a summary remained.
Patient: Victoria Ashford. Delivery classification amended. Infant A transferred to cardiac recovery. Infant B transferred under Constellation protocol. Maternal disclosure restricted by E.V.
Victoria read the lines repeatedly.
“I saw one baby.”
Dr. Voss stood near the terminal.
“You were heavily sedated after an emergency cesarean.”
“You were my surgeon.”
“I treated Amelia’s heart. I was not present during delivery.”
“Did you know there was another infant?”
“Not then.”
Lila felt the room tilt.
If the record was genuine, she had a twin sister.
Anna was not that sister. DNA showed no maternal relationship.
The anonymous message at the wedding—THE WRONG DAUGHTER HAS BEEN FOUND—might have referred to the twin, not Lila.
Grace asked who authorized the restricted disclosure.
E.V. could mean Edmund Vale or Elena Vale.
The same initials belonged to siblings on opposite sides of the conspiracy.
Walter had exploited that ambiguity throughout the archive.
Detective Quinn secured every remaining document.
Before leaving, Ethan found a photograph beneath the registry terminal.
It showed Victoria in a hospital bed holding a newborn.
Behind the bed, a nurse carried another bundled infant toward the door.
The second child’s face was hidden.
A handwritten time appeared on the border.
Four minutes after Lila’s recorded birth.
Victoria touched the photograph.
“My father took this.”
“How do you know?” Lila asked.
“He used to mark time with a dash beneath the final number.”
If Edmund photographed both infants, he knew.
The group returned upstairs.
News reporters had surrounded the foundation building after rumors of the hidden archive spread. The trust battle, interrupted wedding, and missing executive had become national headlines.
Lila refused public comment.
Victoria’s attorney wanted a statement emphasizing family unity.
Lila walked away from him.
There was no unity.
There were connections, injuries, and unanswered identities.
Anna requested independent housing away from Dr. Voss.
The surgeon objected, calling herself Anna’s only family.
Anna looked directly at her.
“You built my childhood around a lie. You do not get to define family now.”
Lila helped arrange a secure apartment.
Their relationship was not sisterhood.
But they understood one another in a way no one else could.
Both had been shaped as answers to another woman’s grief.
Ethan searched the archive copies for NORTH-17.
A medical note described a birthmark behind his right knee and a blood condition requiring periodic monitoring.
Ethan had both.
The record listed his biological mother only as Patient R.
Rebecca Cole remained the strongest possibility, but Dr. Voss insisted Rebecca delivered Anna.
Twins could explain Ethan and Anna as siblings, yet the ages did not match official records.
Every date in Project Constellation could be false.
Detective Quinn received a call from Walter.
He demanded immunity and continued trust access in exchange for the twin record.
The prosecutor refused.
Walter then sent one page.
It contained a footprint labeled Infant B Ashford and a notation:
Transferred to Vale family custody.
Victoria’s mother, Margaret Vale, had no living children besides Victoria.
Her aunt Elena vanished.
Another branch existed.
Walter’s message ended:
ASK THE WOMAN WHO RAISED THE SECOND GIRL. SHE IS ALREADY IN THE ROOM.
Everyone gathered in the Ashford estate library.
Victoria.
Lila.
Grace.
Anna.
Ethan.
Dr. Voss.
Detective Quinn.
Only one woman had raised a girl without biological records.
Grace Hart.
Lila looked toward her adoptive mother.
Grace’s face emptied.
“What did Samuel never tell you?” Victoria asked.
Grace began crying.
“When we received Lila, the social worker brought two children.”
The room became silent.
“One was Lila,” Grace continued. “The other was sick. Judith said another family would collect her before morning.”
“Did they?” Lila asked.
“I believed so.”
“Who took her?”
Grace looked toward Dr. Voss.
“She did.”
Anna stood abruptly.
Dr. Voss remained still.
The surgeon had taken the second girl from Grace’s home twenty-two years earlier.
Anna’s DNA proved she was Rebecca’s daughter, not Victoria’s.
So the child Dr. Voss removed was someone else.
Possibly Victoria’s twin daughter.
“Where is she?” Victoria demanded.
Dr. Voss’s composure finally broke.
“I thought she died.”
“You thought?”
“She was taken from me three months later.”
“By whom?”
The surgeon looked toward the window.
A black vehicle had stopped beyond the estate gates.
A woman stepped out.
She wore a dark coat and carried Ethan’s missing north-star bracelet.
Dr. Voss whispered one name.
May you like
“Elena.”
👉 Grace revealed two children arrived on the night of Lila’s adoption, and Victoria’s long-missing aunt appeared carrying the token needed to unlock the twin records.
