He sounded exhausted.
“I did not create the second invitation.”
“Who did?” Detective Quinn asked.
“Edmund.”
“You expect us to believe he is alive?”
“I expect you to understand that I have spent twenty-two years taking orders from a dead man.”
Walter agreed to meet at a public train station.
He demanded immunity and protection.
The prosecution offered neither but promised to document cooperation.
Lila insisted on attending behind surveillance glass.
Walter arrived wearing a cap and carrying no luggage. He looked older than at the wedding, his confident posture reduced by days of flight.
Quinn began with the kidnapping.
Walter admitted moving Amelia from the hospital under Edmund’s authorization.
He claimed he believed the removal would last only days while trust documents were renegotiated.
“Why keep her for two years?” Lila asked through the communication speaker.
Walter looked toward the glass.
“Because Edmund refused to return her.”
“You financed the house.”
“To keep her alive.”
“You threatened Grace.”
“To keep Edmund from finding her again.”
The claim reframed his actions without excusing them.
Walter said he moved Lila to Kentucky because Edmund intended to place her permanently inside Project Constellation.
Grace’s home became an unauthorized escape.
“Then why monitor me?” Lila asked.
“Because Edmund never stopped searching.”
“You also used my existence to control the trust.”
Walter did not deny it.
“I protected myself while protecting you.”
“Those were not the same thing.”
“No.”
He admitted arranging Ethan’s adoption under Edmund’s orders. He also intercepted Rebecca’s attempts to reclaim him.
Ethan watched from another room.
The harm multiplied even when Walter described fear.
Quinn asked about Rachel’s wedding.
Edmund designed a contingency plan.
If Amelia returned, Rachel would claim the identity.
If DNA established Lila conclusively, Rachel would instead marry Ethan.
The Ashford-Vale merger would move Lila’s voting rights into marital litigation and place Vale representatives around both heirs.
Ethan had been selected as a legal bridge because his manufactured identity carried access to the north-star token.
“Did Rachel agree?” Lila asked.
Walter hesitated.
“She was raised to believe it was her purpose.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I don’t know what she wants now.”
Walter said Rachel began disobeying Edmund two years earlier. She investigated Grace, Samuel, and Lila independently.
She arranged the charity event where Lila met Ethan, but Walter believed her motive changed from marriage substitution to exposure.
Rachel wanted the truth public.
She also wanted Victoria to experience rejection before reunion.
“Why?” Victoria asked through the speaker.
Walter looked toward her camera.
“Because Edmund taught her you chose Ethan over both daughters.”
Victoria’s face collapsed.
Walter offered the twin record location.
Edmund maintained a private facility beneath Briar House, the estate where Rachel was raised.
The facility contained original DNA, video, and instructions for Project Constellation.
Walter had stolen copies but never accessed the central archive.
“Where is Briar House?” Quinn asked.
Walter gave coordinates in rural Virginia.
Before the meeting ended, he placed a small drive on the table.
“One more thing.”
The drive contained an audio file recorded during the wedding.
Rachel spoke with someone through an earpiece.
“The scar is visible,” she said. “Victoria has recognized Amelia.”
A male voice answered.
“Then begin Phase Rose.”
Lila listened twice.
The voice resembled Edmund from old family films.
Walter leaned toward the glass.
“He watched the wedding live.”
A gunshot shattered the station window.
Walter fell from his chair.
Security rushed toward him.
The bullet struck his shoulder, not his heart.
A second shot hit the surveillance camera.
Passengers screamed and scattered.
Quinn dragged Walter behind concrete cover.
Lila looked through the cracked glass toward the opposite platform.
A silver-haired man stood beside a departing train.
His face was partially hidden.
Victoria saw him.
“Father.”
The train doors closed.
