Chapter 4 - The Missing PagesVictoria had never told anyone about the call.

Not Charles. Not the police. Not even her own attorney.

She received it at 2:13 in the morning, six hours after Amelia’s emergency heart procedure. A woman claimed Charles Ashford had fathered a child with a hospital employee and that the baby was hidden in another wing.

Victoria had been exhausted, frightened, and already suspicious because Charles had spent months traveling for business.

She left Amelia’s room for twelve minutes.

The other wing was empty.

When she returned, alarms were sounding. Smoke filled the neonatal corridor. Staff moved infants toward emergency exits.

Amelia’s bassinet was empty.

“I believed the call was designed to lure me away,” Victoria said. “But I was ashamed. I thought the police would blame me.”

Lila stared at her.

“So you hid evidence during my kidnapping.”

“I was afraid Charles would think I abandoned you because of jealousy.”

“Did he?”

“He never knew.”

Grace folded her arms.

“Secrets did not protect your marriage. They protected the person who took her.”

Victoria accepted the accusation without defense.

Detective Quinn requested access to the complete hospital investigation. Most original records had been destroyed during a basement flood twelve years earlier.

But Grace’s adoption file contained copied pages from before that destruction.

They returned to Kentucky the next day.

Samuel Hart’s old study remained almost exactly as he left it before his death. Books lined the walls. A wooden desk faced the garden. Grace opened a locked cabinet beneath the window.

Inside were school records, adoption correspondence, and birthday cards sent from unknown addresses during Lila’s childhood.

Every card contained a gold star.

Lila opened one from her fifth birthday.

You are loved where you are. Never let anyone take you north.

The handwriting belonged to Judith Cole.

Grace recognized it from the adoption forms.

“Why did you keep these from me?”

“I told myself they were from the agency.”

“You knew they weren’t.”

“Yes.”

Lila turned away.

Her childhood had been warm, safe, and full of love. Yet beneath it, adults had made decisions about what truth she could survive.

Grace removed a second envelope.

“Samuel wrote this before he died.”

The letter was addressed to Lila.

Grace had never opened it.

Lila broke the seal.

Samuel described Walter’s visit. He also admitted hiring a private investigator afterward despite the threat.

The investigator discovered Judith Cole living under another name in Pennsylvania. Before Samuel could contact her, Walter returned.

This time he carried a copy of Lila’s school schedule and a photograph of Grace entering church.

Samuel ended the search.

But he hid the investigator’s notes behind a loose panel in the study.

Ethan found the panel near the floor.

Inside were seventeen pages.

The investigator had identified Judith’s rented home during the two missing years. Neighbors remembered a woman caring for a toddler with a surgical scar. The child was rarely allowed outdoors.

One neighbor reported seeing a black Ashford company car every month.

The final note contained a license plate registered to Walter’s executive office.

Victoria sat heavily in Samuel’s chair.

“He financed it.”

Detective Quinn examined the papers.

“Possibly. But the file also contains payments from St. Catherine’s Hospital Foundation.”

Lila looked up.

“Why would the hospital pay the woman who took me?”

The detective turned to another page.

The hospital foundation chairman at the time was Victoria’s father, Edmund Vale.

Victoria’s face changed.

“My father led the search.”

“He also authorized confidential payments to Judith.”

Grace covered her mouth.

The investigation shifted from one uncle to an entire family system.

Lila picked up a child’s drawing attached to the notes.

Two stick figures stood beneath a large star.

One was labeled LILY.

The other was labeled ANNA.

“Who is Anna?”

Grace shook her head.

“I never saw that drawing.”

On the reverse side, Judith had written:

One child was delivered. The other remained with the people who created the lie.

Ethan looked at Lila.

“The wrong daughter has been found.”

The anonymous message returned with new meaning.

The file did not suggest Lila was false. DNA had proven she was Victoria’s child.

It suggested another child was still connected to the disappearance.

👉 The adoption records confirmed Walter financed Lila’s hidden childhood, but a drawing of two girls revealed she may not have been the only child taken from St. Catherine’s Hospital.
