When Ethan invited her on the third day, both women sat across from each other.
Victoria spoke first.
“I did not know.”
Laura nodded.
“I know that now.”
“I loved him.”
“I know.”
“I should have searched when I discovered the adoption papers were incomplete.”
“Yes.”
The honesty between them carried no dramatic forgiveness.
It created room for responsibility.
Ethan learned his biological father was a military physician who died before his birth. Edmund selected Laura because her child had no powerful paternal family.
Ethan’s placement inside the Ashfords was meant to calm Victoria and create a controllable male successor.
He became the substitute son.
Yet Charles taught him to ride a bicycle. Victoria sat beside him through pneumonia. No manipulation could retroactively erase lived love.
The memorial gala approached.
Rachel remained silent.

He still loved her.

Rachel planned to donate stolen trust money publicly.

Edmund could then claim the disclosure was extortion.
Lila sent another message.
Do not use our money to force people into the truth.
Rachel finally responded.
It is not your money. It was built from our disappearance.
Lila could not deny that.
But the choice still affected employees, patients, and families who knew nothing about the conspiracy.
At the Vale retirement residence, Laura gave Ethan an old key.
It belonged to a private viewing room beneath the hospital gala stage.
Edmund used it to monitor donor events without appearing publicly.
“If he comes,” she said, “he will watch from below.”
Ethan gave the key to Quinn.
Security planned around the hidden room.
The night before the gala, Ethan found an envelope beneath his apartment door.
Inside was a replacement north-star bracelet.
The hidden tag read:
NATHANIEL CROSS—PRIMARY TRANSFER.
A second line appeared beneath ultraviolet light.
MATERNAL ELECTION CANDIDATE.
Ethan realized Edmund’s plan did not end with Victoria choosing between daughters.
The trust allowed a maternal guardian to appoint a temporary successor if both biological heirs were compromised.
Victoria could be pressured to choose Ethan.
The substitute son remained the final contingency.
On the back of the tag, Rachel had written:
