Chapter 3 - DNA Under CandlelightThe expedited laboratory worked through the night.

Lila refused to stay at the Ashford estate. She returned to the hotel suite reserved for her wedding night, but nothing in the room felt connected to celebration.

Her dress hung across a chair with the sleeve missing. White roses wilted inside a silver vase. Champagne remained unopened beside two glasses.

Ethan sat near the window, still wearing his tuxedo trousers and white shirt.

Neither knew whether he was the abandoned groom, the adopted son, or a stranger caught inside someone else’s family secret.

Grace occupied the adjoining room. Victoria waited downstairs with her attorney and a detective assigned after Walter’s disappearance.

At three in the morning, Lila finally spoke.

“Did you know your mother investigated me?”

Ethan looked down.

“I knew she hired someone to review your family finances.”

“You let her?”

“I told myself it would calm her down.”

“It never calmed her down. It gave her more ways to insult us.”

“I know.”

“Did she tell you I was using you?”

“Yes.”

Lila closed her eyes.

“And you still married me?”

“I never believed her.”

“You believed enough to stay silent.”

The distinction hurt him because it was true.

At dawn, Detective Mara Quinn arrived with preliminary results.

She asked everyone to gather in the hotel conference room.

Victoria entered carrying the child’s bracelet inside a clear evidence pouch. She no longer wore the superior expression Lila associated with her. Her face looked older, stripped of certainty.

The laboratory report contained three conclusions.

First, Victoria Ashford was Lila’s biological mother with a probability exceeding 99.99 percent.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Grace reached for Lila’s hand.

Lila did not pull away, but she did not move toward Victoria either.

Second, Ethan shared no biological parent with Lila.

Relief passed through the room, but it did not restore the wedding.

The third conclusion surprised everyone.

Ethan’s genetic sample matched a partial profile found in an old St. Catherine’s Hospital database connected to a woman named Rebecca Cole.

Judith Cole’s younger sister.

Victoria looked at the detective.

“Judith’s sister gave birth to Ethan?”

“Possibly. The database is incomplete. But the maternal probability is strong.”

Ethan stared at the report.

“My biological mother was related to the nurse who took Lila?”

Detective Quinn nodded.

“Your adoption and Lila’s disappearance may be connected.”

Lila turned toward Grace.

“What was my name before you adopted me?”

“The file called you Lily.”

“Victoria called me Amelia.”

Victoria’s voice shook.

“We named you Amelia Rose Ashford.”

Lila looked at her.

“My name is Lila Hart.”

“Yes.”

“You may call me Lila.”

Victoria nodded through tears.

The correction established the first boundary between them.

Detective Quinn placed Walter’s financial records on the table.

Under the Ashford family trust, the first biological child of Victoria and Charles Ashford would inherit controlling voting rights in Ashford Medical Technologies at age twenty-five.

When Amelia was declared legally dead, those shares moved into a temporary trust managed by Walter.

Ethan, as an adopted son, could inherit wealth but not the protected voting block.

Walter had controlled the company for twenty-two years.

“If Lila is legally confirmed as Amelia,” Quinn said, “Walter could lose control immediately.”

Lila stared at the pages.

“I don’t want his company.”

“He may not care what you want,” Ethan said. “Your existence changes the trust.”

Victoria looked at Grace.

“Why did Walter approach you when Lila was six?”

Grace’s face tightened.

“He said a biological claim might emerge one day. He wanted us beyond the reach of American courts.”

Detective Quinn opened another envelope recovered from Walter’s car.

Inside were recent photographs of Lila.

At work.

Shopping with Grace.

Standing beside Ethan during their engagement party.

Walter had monitored her for years.

One photograph was older.

Lila appeared approximately eight, kneeling beside a birthday cake.

A gold star had been drawn over her left shoulder.

“He knew about the scar,” Victoria whispered.

The detective nodded.

“But why allow Ethan to date her?” Grace asked.

Ethan looked toward the report linking him to Judith’s family.

“Maybe he didn’t.”

He remembered meeting Lila at a hospital charity event. An event Walter had insisted he attend.

Their seats were assigned beside each other.

Their companies later collaborated on a project recommended by an Ashford board member.

What had felt like coincidence might have been arranged.

Lila’s phone vibrated.

Another unknown message.

This time, it contained a live photograph of Walter standing beside a highway sign outside the city.

He held a folder against his chest.

The caption read:

ASK VICTORIA WHAT SHE DID THE NIGHT AMELIA DISAPPEARED.

Everyone looked toward her.

Victoria’s face became pale.

Lila felt the first sharp edge of suspicion.

“What did you do?”

Victoria gripped the table.

“I left the hospital.”

“Why?”

Her answer came in a whisper.

May you like

“Because someone called and told me Charles had another child.”

👉 DNA proved Lila was Victoria’s daughter and cleared her relationship with Ethan, but Victoria’s secret departure from the hospital may have created the exact opportunity used to steal her baby.
