He contacted Lila from Grace’s phone.
“Your mother is alive.”
“Which mother?”
The question stopped him.
“Grace.”
“Where is she?”
“With me.”
Lila’s rage sharpened.
“If you hurt her—”
“I removed her before Mara’s people arrived.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because Samuel once saved my life.”
Walter revealed that Samuel discovered Edmund planned to kill him after the Kentucky adoption. Samuel warned Walter and helped him escape an ambush.
Their relationship afterward remained hostile but connected through mutual fear.
Walter had monitored Grace partly as threat, partly as protection.
Again, two motives existed.
Neither erased the harm.
He arranged a meeting at an abandoned greenhouse outside Louisville.
Federal teams surrounded the location secretly.
Lila entered with Quinn.
Grace sat inside unharmed, wrapped in a blanket.
She stood and embraced Lila.
“I’m sorry.”
“You did nothing.”
“I opened the door because the voice sounded like you.”

Walter intercepted the abduction team after recognizing their vehicle.
One attacker carried orders signed by Rachel.
Walter placed the document on the table.
Lila examined the signature.
“Real?”
“Her biometric certificate approved it.”
Grace looked frightened.
“Would Rachel order this?”
Walter answered.
“She might order relocation without knowing Edmund intended murder.”
The distinction mattered.
Mara could frame instructions deceptively.
Rachel might have believed Grace was being moved for leverage or safety.
Or she may have accepted harm.
Walter offered access to Edmund’s private communication hub in exchange for witness protection.
Quinn refused to promise outcomes.
He accepted.
The hub operated beneath an old botanical research station owned by the Vale Foundation.
Walter had served Edmund because he believed no institution could protect his family.
“Your fear made you rich,” Lila said.
“It also kept you alive.”
“You always combine those sentences.”
Walter looked ashamed.
The greenhouse contained Samuel’s favorite roses.
He had once worked there temporarily while investigating Edmund.
Grace found a carved message beneath a bench.
WALTER KNOWS WHERE EDMUND SLEEPS.
Walter admitted the truth.
Edmund used experimental life-extension treatments at Origin House. His public death allowed unrestricted movement.
He now stayed aboard a private medical train that traveled between Vale facilities.
The silver-haired man Victoria saw at the station was Edmund.
The train served as clinic, command center, and archive.
Mara and Rachel were likely aboard.
Walter had a schedule.
The train would pass through Kentucky that night.
Quinn organized an interception with federal rail authorities.
Victoria insisted on joining the command team but not the breach.
Lila and Ethan remained at a secure station.
Grace refused to leave Lila.
At midnight, the medical train approached.
Authorities redirected it onto an isolated track.
The engine slowed.
Then stopped.
Agents entered.
Most cars were empty.
One contained Project Constellation servers.
Another held medical equipment.
The final car contained Edmund’s bed.
Empty.
A live monitor showed him sitting elsewhere.
Rachel stood beside him.
Mara was absent.
Edmund addressed Lila through the feed.
“Walter finally chose the losing family.”
Walter stared at the screen.
Edmund continued.
“Grace was never the target. She was the test.”
Rachel looked toward the camera, her expression tense.
“The test of what?” Lila asked.
“Whether you would trust Walter after he rescued her.”
Lila understood.
Edmund was manipulating redemption as carefully as fear.
He wanted Walter brought back into the family structure.
The monitor displayed a document.
Walter’s witness-protection request contained a hidden clause transferring his remaining trust interests to Ethan.
Walter claimed he never added it.
Someone had modified the agreement.
Ethan’s temporary authority expanded automatically.
The substitute son was being moved toward control despite his refusal.
Edmund smiled.
“Every attempt to escape succession completes it.”
The train servers activated.
Ashford voting rights began transferring to Ethan.
He stepped away from the terminal.
“I reject them.”
The system ignored him.
Only the biological twins could stop the transfer together.
Rachel looked toward Lila on the screen.
“Give me your chip access.”
“No.”
“Then Ethan becomes what Edmund designed.”
“Come back and stop it with me.”
Rachel’s face tightened.
Edmund placed one hand on her shoulder.
The feed ended.
Walter examined the empty bed.
Beneath the pillow was a blood-pressure cuff still warm.
Edmund had been there minutes earlier.
A hidden door in the train floor led to a service tunnel beneath the tracks.
Mara had extracted him.
Rachel may have gone willingly.
