Chapter 26 - The Second StarRachel disappeared from federal protection before dawn.

Security footage showed her leaving Origin House with Elena Vale.
Elena claimed Rachel received a message identifying Mara’s clinic and refused to wait.
Lila was furious.
“She keeps acting alone because she thinks urgency makes consent irrelevant.”
Victoria looked toward the empty room.
“She learned that from Edmund.”
“She is still responsible.”
“Yes.”
The response mattered.
Love did not require denial.
Rachel and Elena reached the private clinic in Pennsylvania. By the time federal teams arrived, the building had been evacuated.
Blood marked one surgical room.
The implant-extraction equipment had been prepared but not used.
Rachel’s phone lay on the floor.
A video recorded her confrontation with Mara.
Mara appeared wearing medical scrubs.
“You planned the wedding beautifully,” Rachel said.
“You supplied the emotion.”
“You told me Victoria needed to recognize Lila publicly.”
“She did.”
“You wanted the trust frozen.”
“I wanted the family exactly where the Founder left it.”
Rachel accused Mara of serving Edmund.
Mara smiled.
“Edmund served continuity. So do I.”
The recording ended when security alarms activated.
No image showed where Rachel went.
Elena was found unconscious in a parking garage. She remembered Rachel entering a black ambulance after receiving a call from Lila’s number.
The voice had been synthetic.
Mara used Lila to lure her twin.
Investigators traced the ambulance toward Chicago.
Meanwhile, Anna began experiencing severe pain near her star scar.
Imaging found no capsule, but a metal fragment remained from the procedure Dr. Voss performed in childhood.
The fragment contained a serial number matching Rachel’s implant system.
Anna was not merely a decoy.
She carried a backup authenticator.
Project Constellation used her body as a substitute if either twin became unavailable.
Dr. Voss admitted implanting it.
Anna’s anger exploded.
“You keep saying you protected children.”
“I believed the system prevented worse harm.”
“You cut me open so another family could use me.”
Voss lowered her eyes.
Anna demanded removal.
Unlike Rachel, she completed independent counseling and consent review before surgery.
The fragment was extracted successfully.
Inside was a tiny data strip.
It contained one message from Rebecca Cole.
Anna, if you ever find this, know that you were not born to replace anyone. Your name was mine before they took it.
Anna cried while Ethan held her hand.
The message gave her something no fabricated history had provided.
A name chosen with love.
The data strip also contained access to Mara’s medical transport network.
Lila located the ambulance.
It entered Chicago through a private tunnel beneath the Ashford company laboratory.
Federal teams surrounded the building.
Mara appeared on the security feed beside Rachel.
Rachel was conscious, seated in a surgical chair with her chest prepared for extraction.
Mara spoke through the intercom.
“Bring Lila’s chip.”
Lila stood beside Quinn.
“No.”
“Then your sister loses hers permanently.”
“You need both.”
“I need one removed before the other becomes useful.”
Rachel looked toward the camera.
“Don’t come.”
Mara pressed a surgical instrument against the skin above her implant.
Lila’s body reacted before reason.
Victoria caught her arm.
“You do not have to trade yourself.”
“She’s my sister.”
“Yes.”
“You lost both of us because people hesitated.”
Victoria absorbed the accusation.
Then she said, “And I will not lose you again by helping someone force your body into another exchange.”
Together, they refused the trade.
Mara’s expression changed.
She expected maternal guilt to control Victoria.
Instead, Victoria allowed law enforcement to proceed.
Power failed inside the pattern.
Federal agents breached the laboratory through the lower tunnel.
The feed went dark.
When they reached the surgical room, Rachel was gone.
Mara was gone.
Only the prepared instruments remained.
A second star had been cut into the leather chair.
Beneath it, written in blood from Mara’s own finger, were four words.
SHE CAME WITH ME.
No sign of struggle appeared.
Rachel may have chosen to leave with Mara.

Or she wanted them to believe that.
👉 Mara escaped the laboratory with Rachel after Victoria refused another forced exchange, leaving the family unsure whether Lila’s twin had been abducted—or had joined the Founder’s successor willingly.
