She had lived under the name Judy Collins for twenty years. Heart disease had weakened her body, but her memory remained sharp.
When Detective Quinn showed her Lila’s wedding photograph, Judith began crying.
“She looks like Elena.”
“Who is Elena?” Lila asked through the secure video connection.
Judith stared at the screen.
“Your grandmother.”
Victoria’s mother had been named Margaret Vale, not Elena.
Judith corrected herself.
“Not your family grandmother. The woman who protected you during the first year.”
The answer created another layer of confusion.
Judith admitted removing Amelia from St. Catherine’s Hospital.
She insisted she did not plan the kidnapping.
On the night of the fire, Walter entered the neonatal wing carrying authorization signed by Edmund Vale. He ordered Judith to move Amelia to a private ambulance, claiming the child faced an immediate security threat.
Judith questioned him.
Walter showed her photographs of her younger sister, Rebecca, pregnant and unmarried. He threatened to expose Rebecca’s relationship with a married hospital administrator and have her child removed after birth.
Judith carried Amelia out.
The ambulance took them to a house in Indiana.
A woman named Elena cared for the infant there.
“Was Elena working for Walter?” Quinn asked.
“No. She was working against him.”
Elena had been hired as a private pediatric nurse. Within weeks, she realized Amelia was kidnapped. She began documenting visitors, payments, and medical records.
Judith wanted to go to police.
Elena warned that Edmund Vale controlled hospital administrators and several officers involved in the original search.
Six months later, Elena disappeared.
Judith believed she had been killed.
After that, Walter controlled every contact.
He paid Judith to remain with Amelia until the child’s second birthday. Then he ordered her to place the girl through a private adoption network in Kentucky.
“Why Grace and Samuel?” Lila asked.
“They had no money, no powerful relatives, and no connection to Illinois. Walter believed no one would look for an Ashford child in their home.”
Grace flinched at the description, but Judith continued.
“I chose them because I watched them first. They were kind. I told myself kindness was the last thing I could still give you.”
“You stole me from my mother,” Lila said.
“Yes.”
“You watched another woman search for me.”
“Yes.”
“You took money.”
“Yes.”
Judith offered no excuse strong enough to become forgiveness.
She revealed that Rebecca gave birth to Ethan fourteen months after Amelia disappeared. Walter arranged for Victoria and Charles to adopt him.
“Why?” Ethan asked.
“Because Victoria’s grief was becoming dangerous to them. She accused the hospital publicly. She hired investigators. Edmund believed another child would quiet her.”
Ethan’s face collapsed.
He had not been chosen from love alone.
His placement was designed to manage Victoria.
Judith shook her head when she saw his reaction.
“Charles and Victoria loved you. Whatever Walter intended, their love was real.”
“Did my mother agree?”
“Rebecca was told you would receive medical care and a wealthy life. She signed temporary guardianship papers. Walter converted them into permanent surrender.”
“Where is she now?”
Judith looked toward the facility window.
“I don’t know. She disappeared after trying to reclaim you.”
The detective asked about Anna.
Judith became frightened.
“That name should not be spoken.”
“Why?”
“Because Anna was the child Walter believed could replace Amelia if the truth surfaced.”
Lila touched the star scar.
“Did Anna have the same mark?”
Judith nodded.
“Dr. Voss made certain of it.”
The second child underwent a minor procedure that left a similar star-shaped scar. If Victoria ever found the wrong girl, Walter could discredit the identification and claim grief had made her irrational.
Anna was a living decoy.
Judith did not know where she was sent.
Before ending the interview, she gave Quinn the location of a storage box maintained under Elena’s name.
Inside, investigators found toddler photographs of Lila, payment records, and a tiny key taped behind one image.
The photograph showed Lila beside another little girl.
Both wore silver bracelets.
Both had gold star charms.
On the back, Elena had written:
