Chapter 33 - The Second Wedding AttemptSix months after the first wedding, Lila and Ethan chose a private ceremony.

No reporters.

No family trust representatives.

No hospital donors.

Only Grace, Victoria, Rachel, Anna, Laura, Elena, and a small circle of friends.

They selected Grace’s backyard in Kentucky.

The decision was not surrender to romance.

It was a refusal to let Edmund, Margaret, Walter, Mara, or any trust determine whether their love belonged to them.

Lila wore a simple cream dress.

The left shoulder remained uncovered.

The star scar had begun fading after capsule removal.

She did not hide it.

Victoria asked before approaching.

“May I help with the flowers?”

Lila nodded.

The boundary itself became a kind of trust.

Rachel stood apart near the maple tree.

She had not fully forgiven Victoria.

She had not fully forgiven Lila for refusing her methods.

But she came.

Grace walked Lila toward Ethan.

No music played except birds and wind.

The officiant began.

Then every phone vibrated.

A live video appeared.

The twenty-seven missing children sat inside a train car.

Margaret Ashford stood at the front.

“Marriage again,” she said. “How persistent.”

Security moved toward the house.

The feed continued.

Margaret displayed a cloned trust certificate registered to Ethan.

The train carrying the children was legally owned by an Ashford subsidiary under his temporary authority.

If intercepted violently, the company would appear responsible for trafficking.

She demanded Grace sign the leadership contract publicly before the wedding vows concluded.

Grace stepped forward.

“I will sign.”

Lila caught her hand.

“No.”

“They are children.”

“And she will create more.”

Margaret smiled on the screen.

“Victoria understands this choice.”

Victoria looked toward the ceremony.

Twenty-two years earlier, fear and secrecy allowed others to take her daughters.

Now another woman demanded sacrifice under public pressure.

Victoria faced the camera.

“Grace does not choose alone.”

Rachel moved beside her.

“Neither do we.”

Anna contacted the independent council.

Ethan opened the cloned corporate account.

Lila directed federal agents to the train signal.

The family distributed the decision.

Margaret’s leverage weakened because no single person held responsibility.

The train crossed into Vermont.

Authorities intercepted it at an abandoned freight yard.

The cars were empty.

The video had been prerecorded.

The real children remained elsewhere.

Margaret had used the wedding again as an activation event.

While everyone watched the feed, her agents entered Grace’s house through an underground storm cellar Samuel built decades earlier.

Their target was not a person.

It was the original repaired gown stored in Grace’s cedar chest.

The police still held the torn sleeve, but Grace kept the remaining dress after evidence release.

Inside its lining, seamstresses found a silver thread carrying biometric data from Lila’s skin.

The wedding gown itself had collected her identity during fittings.

Rachel had arranged the original designer through Mara.

Margaret now possessed a complete biological template even without the chip.

She could create new decoys.

The private ceremony stopped.

Lila stood before Ethan.

“We can continue.”

He looked at the open cellar and missing gown.

“Do you want to?”

She considered the question.

Not what Margaret expected.

Not what Victoria wanted.

Not what the guests hoped.

Her choice.

“No.”

Ethan nodded.

They did not interpret postponement as rejection.

They walked away from the altar together.

Rachel watched them.

“You chose not to let urgency own the moment.”

Lila looked at her.

“You can learn it too.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Then a courier arrived at the gate carrying a black box.

Inside was a wedding ring identical to Ethan’s.

A drop of fresh blood marked the band.

DNA testing identified the blood as belonging to one of the missing children.

Beneath the ring lay a new invitation.

THIRD CEREMONY. FOUNDER’S CHAPEL. BRIDE: GRACE HART.

The Matron did not want Grace to marry a person.

She wanted her to marry the institution through ritualized succession.

The date was forty-eight hours away.

👉 Lila and Ethan refused to let a second wedding become another trap, but Margaret stole the gown’s biometric data and summoned Grace to a third ceremony designed to make her the new Matron.
