Chapter 14 - The Two FathersThe cliffside chapel overlooked a black winter sea.

Federal and Canadian teams surrounded the property, but Beatrice had installed motion sensors along the only road. A direct breach might trigger the ceremony’s biometric system or harm Evelyn.

Clara entered with Patricia and Leonard.

No weapons were visible.

Beatrice Price waited near the altar in a pale gray suit.

At ninety-one, she appeared fragile.

Her eyes were not.

Evelyn sat in the front pew wearing the restored wedding gown. Her hair had turned silver. Clara recognized her face from photographs and dreams.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked up.

Confusion moved through her expression.

Then certainty.

“Clara.”

The single word broke twenty-six years of distance.

Clara crossed the aisle and knelt before her.

Evelyn touched her face.

“You grew up.”

Tears filled Clara’s eyes.

“You were alive.”

“I tried to come home.”

Beatrice cleared her throat.

“This reunion can continue after the legal correction.”

The two men stood beside the altar.

Michael looked exactly as Clara last saw him.

The second man carried similar scars but moved more slowly. His eyes held something Clara remembered from childhood.

Thomas always tilted his head before saying her name.

The second man did.

“Little bird.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Only her father used that nickname.

Michael knew it too.

He had studied Thomas’s journals.

Beatrice presented two biometric files.

Both men matched the Mason bloodline.

Only Evelyn’s memory and Clara’s witness could establish identity for the hidden trust.

“Why do you need us to choose?” Clara asked.

“Because the original Mason partnership requires recognition by spouse and child.”

“What happens to the man we reject?”

Beatrice smiled.

“He becomes legally irrelevant.”

The wrong man could lose every claim, including access to testimony and evidence.

Patricia walked around both.

She had met Thomas years earlier and Michael more recently.

“Ask them about Richard.”

Clara did.

The first man, Michael, described Richard rescuing Thomas after the crash.

The second said Richard caused it.

Everyone froze.

Thomas claimed Richard followed their car not to save them but to force Evelyn to surrender the ledger. When Samuel’s vehicle struck them, Richard removed Thomas from the wreck and delivered him to Meridian Crown.

Michael had been brought later as substitute.

Richard may have pretended to help while serving Beatrice.

Patricia’s face collapsed.

“My husband was part of it?”

Thomas looked at her.

“He tried to leave in the end.”

Both men possessed partial truths.

Evelyn listened.

Beatrice moved toward her.

“Choose your husband.”

Evelyn looked at the men.

Then at Clara.

“No.”

Beatrice’s smile disappeared.

“The trust requires recognition.”

“The trust does not require love.”

Evelyn stood unsteadily.

“I will not identify a husband under threat.”

Clara took her arm.

Beatrice activated the chapel doors.

They locked.

The biometric screen began a countdown.

If no husband was recognized, the Mason rights would transfer to Meridian Crown’s continuity custodian.

Patricia approached Beatrice.

“You arranged my marriage.”

“I improved your circumstances.”

“You taught me to treat cruelty as strength.”

“I taught you to survive elite families.”

Patricia slapped her.

The sound echoed through the chapel.

Beatrice staggered but remained standing.

Leonard used the distraction to disable one door sensor.

Federal agents breached the side entrance.

Samuel Price appeared above the choir loft and fired toward the altar.

Michael pushed Clara down.

The second man shielded Evelyn.

Both acted as family.

Samuel escaped through a hidden passage with Beatrice.

The countdown stopped after Naomi cut the ceremonial receiver.

Outside, Evelyn was taken to a secure hospital.

Clara stayed beside her.

“Which man is Dad?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I don’t know.”

The answer devastated Clara.

“They changed my medication. They made them visit separately. Each knew things. Each accused the other.”

Thomas and Michael were detained voluntarily for identity review.

Advanced epigenetic testing might distinguish their life histories through environmental markers, but results required time.

Evelyn gave Clara one truth.

“The man you called Michael saved me from the clinic once.”

Clara looked toward him.

“And the other?”

“He was the reason I stayed.”

“Because he was Dad?”

“Because Beatrice threatened to kill him if I left.”

The family roles remained tangled.

Then Evelyn saw Andrew’s infant photograph.

Her hands began shaking.

“That baby.”

“You knew him?”

“I delivered him.”

Clara stared.

Evelyn was not a physician.

But during her Meridian work, she helped move Andrew from a private fertility facility.

“Who was his father?”

Evelyn looked toward Patricia.

“Richard.”

Patricia stopped breathing.

Andrew was Richard Whitlock’s biological son after all.

The donor story was fabricated to create uncertainty.

His Mason compatibility came through his mother.

Patricia’s true maiden identity had been altered.

She was David Mason’s daughter.

Clara and Andrew were second cousins, not first cousins, and the family had hidden Patricia’s Mason ancestry.

Before more could be explained, Evelyn suffered a seizure.

Doctors rushed her away.

Inside her gown, Clara found a stitched message.
