Chapter 26 - The Vote No One RequestedMeridian families received secure ballots.

Each candidate represented a different future.

Patricia promised restitution and family review.

She had submitted no platform.

Catherine promised controlled dismantling.

That platform was real.

Elizabeth promised preservation of identity safeguards.

Also real.

Clara promised independent oversight and victim consent.

Someone copied her public statements and built the platform without permission.

Her refusal became part of the campaign.

THE ONLY CANDIDATE WHO DOES NOT WANT POWER.

Support grew rapidly.

Naomi warned that winning could create legal and digital authority before Clara could reject it.

The system interpreted selection as binding custodianship.

Julian found the campaign source.

A Bellemont server.

Someone inside the estate supported Clara.

Daniel audited staff credentials.

The account belonged to Rosa, the seamstress repairing the gown.

Rosa disappeared.

Her employment history was false.

She had worked for Everwhite for thirty years.

Clara remembered Rosa identifying the prepared tear and tracker.

She guided them toward each revelation.

Rosa left a note inside the gown lining.

I served Evelyn before I served Beatrice. The system needs someone who understands that clothing can protect without binding. Forgive the nomination.

Clara did not forgive it.

Rosa believed purpose justified consent violations just like everyone else.

Yet her knowledge might locate Beatrice.

The repaired gown contained another thread signal.

It led to an estate cottage on Bellemont property.

Beatrice Price sat inside.

Alive.

Her public death had activated succession intentionally.

Rosa cared for her.

Catherine, Patricia, Elizabeth, Clara, and Naomi entered together.

Beatrice looked toward the restored gown.

“Beautiful.”

Clara held it away from her.

“You don’t own what survived you.”

Beatrice admitted staging her death to force selection.

Samuel had become too reckless.

She believed Clara could reform Meridian Crown without destroying families.

“You built a system that steals choice and now want to appoint me because I value it.”

“Contradiction creates balance.”

“No. It creates another excuse.”

Patricia asked why Beatrice chose her as heir.

“Because you understand how humiliation establishes order.”

Patricia looked at the floor.

Catherine asked why her acceptance was rejected.

“You love design more than people.”

Elizabeth asked why she remained hidden.

“Because you preserve structure even after structure harms.”

Beatrice had judged them all as functions.

Clara asked about Samuel.

“He will destroy the vault if he loses.”

“Where is he?”

“Inside Bellemont.”

Security searched the estate repeatedly.

Beatrice revealed the original chapel contained a fourth lower level accessible only through the wedding dress map and Bridekeeper blood.

Samuel had entered before the ceremony and never fully left.

He used tunnels, remote systems, and substitutes while remaining beneath Clara’s home.

Andrew remembered the first time Patricia brought him to Bellemont two years earlier.

Julian disappeared for twenty minutes near the wine cellar.

Samuel may have entered then using their group access.

The succession vote reached sixty percent for Clara.

She had hours before automatic confirmation.

Beatrice offered to cancel it if Clara accepted a private transfer first.

Clara refused.

Naomi placed Beatrice under arrest.

Rosa surrendered.

The federal team prepared to enter the fourth level.

Patricia volunteered her Bridekeeper biometrics.

Catherine carried the gown map.

Clara held ownership access.

The three women who had been positioned as rivals had to cooperate.

Andrew remained above with Daniel, monitoring systems.

Before they descended, he approached Clara.

“If you become custodian automatically, what will you do?”

“Reject it publicly.”

“What if rejection destroys evidence?”

“Then we create another option.”

He smiled faintly.

“You always say that now.”

“Because everyone keeps pretending only two exist.”

The fourth level opened beneath the original bridal suite.

Inside were rows of white dresses preserved behind glass.

Each belonged to a bride whose marriage transferred property through Meridian Crown.

At the end stood Clara’s duplicate gown, undamaged.

A woman wore it.

Rosa whispered, “That’s the ceremonial substitute.”

The woman lifted her veil.

She had Clara’s face.

Not identical.

Surgically altered.

Trained.

Prepared to accept custodianship if Clara refused.

The system did not need Clara’s consent.

May you like

It had built another Clara.

👉 Beatrice’s hidden survival exposed Samuel beneath Bellemont, but the fourth-level vault contained a surgically prepared substitute ready to become Clara and accept the Bridekeeper role in her place.
