Chapter 16 - The Best Man’s Real NameJulian Mercer disappeared after the wedding.

Andrew had known him since boarding school. They shared college apartments, business failures, and family holidays.

Julian introduced Andrew to Reverend Samuel Price.

He encouraged the proposal at Bellemont.

He also recommended the rings.

Every important decision passed through him casually enough to feel like friendship.

Andrew searched their old messages.

Julian repeatedly asked about Clara’s work schedule, family history, and trust preferences. At the time, Andrew interpreted it as interest in his future wife.

Now it looked like surveillance.

Julian’s real name was Julian Price.

Samuel’s son.

Beatrice’s grandson.

The Crown Heir.

The Bridekeeper system intended him to marry Clara if Andrew failed.

Unlike Andrew, Julian carried no Mason blood. The union would transfer property cleanly while keeping Meridian control inside the Price line.

Naomi traced Julian to an Everwhite estate in Virginia.

The property was empty except for a formal dining room prepared for three.

Clara.

Julian.

Evelyn.

A wall displayed photographs of Julian and Clara attending the same events years before they officially met.

He had been placed near her repeatedly.

At sixteen, he stood behind her at a museum fundraiser.

At twenty-one, he appeared at the hotel where she signed Bellemont’s first restoration loan.

At twenty-five, he sat two tables away during the corporate reception where she met Andrew.

Julian had waited while Andrew built the relationship.

Why not approach Clara directly?

Because Beatrice needed the Mason and Whitlock systems activated first. Andrew opened the chamber. Julian would inherit the result.

Andrew struggled with betrayal.

“He was my brother.”

Clara answered softly.

“He may have loved you.”

“That doesn’t make what he did smaller.”

“No.”

The same lesson again.

Love and exploitation could coexist without canceling each other.

Patricia entered witness cooperation.

She gave Naomi access to Whitlock accounts and Everwhite communications. Prosecutors offered no immunity yet.

Andrew refused to speak to her privately.

Clara did not pressure him.

Evelyn remembered Julian visiting the Nova Scotia clinic under another name. He brought recordings of Clara and promised she was safe if Evelyn cooperated.

“He was kind,” Evelyn said.

“Kind people can still be carrying instructions,” Clara replied.

Julian contacted Clara directly.

“I can take you to Beatrice.”

“Why would you?”

“She is dying.”

“That hasn’t improved her choices.”

“She wants the Marriage Room opened before Samuel replaces her.”

“Samuel is her son.”

“She trusts systems, not children.”

Julian claimed Samuel planned to destroy the Meridian registry and sell the underground chamber to foreign buyers.

Beatrice wanted to preserve the archive under Clara’s control.

“Why me?”

“Because Evelyn built the original safeguards.”

“And because you were trained to marry me.”

Silence.

Julian did not deny it.

“Did you love Andrew?” Clara asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you intend to take his fiancée?”

“I intended to complete what he could not.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the one Beatrice gave me.”

His voice finally broke.

Julian offered coordinates to a coastal estate in Maine.

He demanded Clara arrive with both parents and the ownership chip from her ring.

Naomi prepared another controlled operation.

Andrew insisted on coming.

“This is about Julian.”

“It is about me.”

“He used both of us.”

Clara allowed him to join the command team but not the meeting.

At the coastal estate, Julian waited alone inside a glass conservatory filled with white roses.

No weapon visible.

He looked at Clara’s torn gown, which she had chosen to wear again beneath a dark coat.

“You kept it.”

“I decide what the damage means.”

Julian lowered his eyes.

“Beatrice is below.”

He opened a hidden staircase.

Before Clara descended, he gave her a letter.

It was written by Evelyn before the crash.

If Clara ever stands before the Crown Heir, tell her the heir is not Beatrice’s blood. He is mine.

Clara looked at Julian.

His face had gone pale.

Evelyn had a son before Clara.

A child declared dead at birth.

Julian might be Clara’s half-brother.

The replacement groom was another biological trap.

👉 Julian offered to betray Beatrice, but Evelyn’s letter suggested the man trained to marry Clara was actually her lost older brother.
