“You survived,” Pearl said.
Patricia’s voice shook.
“So did you.”
“I watched you marry Richard.”
“You were at the wedding?”
“I adjusted your veil.”
Patricia remembered a young assistant whose face remained hidden beneath a hat.
Pearl had stood beside her at the altar, unseen.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Beatrice said one of us could have a family if the other remained useful.”
“You believed her.”
“We were twelve.”
“And later?”
Pearl’s expression hardened.
“Later I understood your comfort depended on my silence.”
Patricia nearly laughed.
“My marriage was controlled. My son was selected. My company was destroyed.”
“You still had Christmas mornings.”
The resentment mirrored Rachel’s toward Lila.
One sister received visible family.
The other preserved it from shadows.
Pearl admitted attending the rehearsal because Samuel expected Patricia to refuse the final transfer.
