Chapter 31 - THE SIX MOTHERSThe six women stood beneath Bellemont’s flower arch in identical white gowns.

Each held a sleeping infant.

From the chapel steps, Clara saw her own face repeated six times beneath the cold glare of the estate lights. The resemblance was more precise than Claire’s reconstruction had ever been. Same cheekbones. Same dark eyes. Same slight curve of the mouth.

But there were differences Rose had failed to erase.

One woman favored her left leg.

Another held her baby too tightly, as though afraid someone might tear the child from her arms.

A third was silently crying.

Rose’s voice filled the speakers.

“Choose which mother is real.”

Clara descended the steps with the torn gown folded over one arm.

Naomi caught her wrist.

“The vehicles are blocking every exit. We have armed teams moving through the vineyard.”

“Then don’t let them see panic.”

Clara continued toward the arch.

Andrew followed.

The woman nearest them lifted her chin.

“My name is Clara Evelyn Mason.”

The next woman repeated the same words.

Then the third.

Six identical declarations moved through the courtyard.

Patricia stood behind Andrew, her face drained of color. She had spent years judging Clara’s clothes, background, and manners, believing identity could be measured by appearance.

Now appearance had become useless.

Rose laughed softly through the speakers.

“The estate’s recognition system accepts all six women. The trusts accept their faces. The ceremonial archive accepts their signatures. One command from me, and Bellemont will no longer know which Clara owns it.”

Clara stopped several feet from the women.

She did not ask which one was real.

Instead, she looked at the babies.

“Are the children ill?”

The crying woman’s expression changed.

Rose’s laughter stopped.

Clara stepped closer.

“You brought infants into a hostile takeover. Some were born recently. At least one is breathing too quickly. Before you ask me to solve your identity game, every child will be examined by a doctor.”

“You are avoiding the test,” Rose said.

“No. I’m rejecting it.”

Clara turned toward the security cameras.

“You told me to choose which mother was real. They are all real women. The fact that you changed their faces does not erase them.”

The woman favoring her leg trembled.

Clara extended her free hand.

“What was your name before Rose took it?”

The woman looked toward the nearest white vehicle.

A guard raised his weapon.

Naomi’s agents fired from the upper windows.

The guard collapsed before he could pull the trigger.

Chaos erupted.

The six women dropped to the ground, shielding the babies. Andrew ran toward the crying woman while Alexandra and Julian dragged another mother behind a stone planter.

Daniel sealed the courtyard doors.

Thomas and Michael moved toward the vineyard path as federal agents emerged from the guest residences.

Rose’s people did not fight to hold the estate.

They fought to recover the women.

That distinction told Clara everything.

The women were not soldiers.

They were evidence.

The nearest substitute grabbed Clara’s hand.

“My name was Hannah.”

“Was?”

“They told me Hannah died during surgery.”

“You’re standing here.”

“They said the face survived, not the woman.”

Clara tightened her grip.

“Then they lied.”

A sharp electronic tone sounded from all six vehicles.

Naomi shouted from the chapel entrance.

“Get away from them!”

Panels opened beneath the vehicles.

White vapor rolled across the marble.

Andrew lifted one of the babies and ran. Clara pulled Hannah toward the chapel as Patricia gathered the torn train to keep it from dragging through the gas.

The lights went out.

For three seconds, Bellemont disappeared.

When the emergency lamps activated, five mothers and six babies were inside the chapel.

Hannah was gone.

On the marble where she had been standing lay a small silver bracelet.

Clara recognized the engraved rose.

Inside the bracelet was a strip of paper containing seven words:

THE FIRST MOTHER IS ALREADY INSIDE BELLEMONT.

Clara looked at the women around her.

Then at Evelyn.

Then Patricia.

Then Claire.

Rose had not merely delivered six false Claras.

She had hidden another mother among the people Clara already trusted.

👉 Hannah vanished during the attack, but her warning suggested Rose’s most important substitute had been living inside Bellemont long before the convoy arrived.
