Chapter 38 - THE THREE WHO LEFTRose’s boat disappeared before Naomi’s aircraft could intercept it.

No registered vessel matched its hull number. No satellite retained a clear image after it crossed into heavy weather.

At Bellemont, the sanctuary review moved forward.

Rebecca, June, Sofia, Leah, and Marisol still appeared in the archive under Clara’s identity. The system treated their real names as unauthorized aliases.

Clara returned carrying the torn gown and the island’s central data drive.

Patricia had pulled it from the altar before the flooding began.

“Ruining expensive things has taught me where people hide the important pieces,” she said.

The drive contained Rose’s private correspondence.

One message had been sent to Daniel fourteen years earlier:

YOU WILL PROTECT CLARA UNTIL SHE CAN SURVIVE THE TRUTH ABOUT YOU.

Another had been sent to Helena:

WHEN THE ISLAND FALLS, BRING DANIEL HOME.

Andrew read the messages twice.

“Home where?”

Leonard turned pale.

Daniel Cross had not been born Daniel Cross.

His original birth record identified him as Daniel Mason.

Helena’s son.

Rose’s grandson.

The dates meant Helena had given birth at seventeen, months after the fire. Rose removed the baby and placed him with the Cross family, then later recruited him without revealing their relationship.

Daniel had spent years serving beside his biological mother without knowing her.

Clara understood why Helena boarded the boat.

Rose had offered her the one thing the system always used most effectively.

A stolen child.

But Daniel’s role went deeper.

As Rose’s grandson, he possessed a dormant claim to the Mason White Foundation. If Clara refused to become Guardian, Daniel could inherit the network.

“Rose didn’t rescue him,” Naomi said. “She collected her replacement.”

The sanctuary archive activated.

Seven maternal representatives appeared on the ballroom screens.

Six versions of Clara.

And a seventh image.

Helena.

The system recognized her as the first mother and granted her authority over every reflection identity.

From Rose’s boat, Helena had entered the archive.

Rebecca’s name returned first.

Then June’s.

Sofia’s.

Leah’s.

Marisol’s.

The women gasped as their faces remained Clara’s but their legal identities reappeared.

Claire’s original record stayed blank.

Hannah’s record displayed DECEASED.

Helena’s voice filled the ballroom.

“I have restored everyone I can.”

Clara approached the screen.

“Where is Daniel?”

“Safe.”

“Did he choose to leave?”

“He chose after Rose told him who I was.”

“Choice made after a lifetime of withheld truth is not clean consent.”

Helena closed her eyes.

“No choice in this family is clean.”

The review system requested nominations for Guardian.

Rose nominated Daniel Mason.

Catherine nominated Clara.

Clara rejected her nomination.

Everyone turned toward her.

“I will not become hereditary Guardian of children whose lives were engineered to create this position.”

“Then Daniel wins automatically,” Catherine said.

“No. The charter requires a human Guardian only because Rose’s family wrote it that way.”

Clara inserted the island data drive.

She transmitted proof that the succession claims had been created through fraud, stolen genetic material, coerced pregnancy, identity alteration, and falsified consent.

The archive resisted.

Clara added testimonies from the five mothers.

Then Claire.

Then Hannah.

Then Andrew.

Then Alexandra.

Finally, Patricia stepped before the scanner.

“I tore the dress because I believed money and family gave me the right to reduce another woman’s dignity. Rose built a larger version of the same belief. I will accept my punishment. But I will not let her call control protection.”

The archive began deleting ceremonial privileges.

Rose appeared on the final screen.

“You are destroying the only structure capable of keeping these children together.”

“They do not need to remain together to belong to themselves.”

“They will be scattered.”

“They will be protected by people, not owned by a system.”

Rose looked older than she had inside the cottage.

Then Daniel entered the camera frame.

He appeared unharmed.

“Clara,” he said, “don’t erase the foundation.”

“Why?”

“Because the six facilities were not Rose’s entire network.”

He placed a ledger before the camera.

“There are forty-three more.”

The ballroom fell silent.

“If you dissolve the foundation,” Daniel continued, “every facility disappears into shell corporations. We lose the children.”

Rose had given Clara another impossible choice.

Preserve the institution to locate its victims.

Or destroy the institution and risk losing them.

Clara looked at the review clock.

Nine minutes remained.

👉 Daniel revealed forty-three hidden facilities depended on the foundation Clara was about to dissolve, forcing her to choose between ending Rose’s power and finding the remaining children.
