Patricia’s attack interrupted the timing.

“Did Samuel tell you to tear the dress at that exact moment?” Naomi asked.
Patricia sat inside Bellemont’s medical suite with one arm bandaged.
“He told me Clara hid something valuable inside the lace. He said I needed to expose it before the vows.”
“You believed ripping it publicly was necessary?”
Patricia looked toward Clara.
“No. I wanted to hurt her.”
The admission arrived without excuse.
“I had spent two years feeling she was taking Andrew away. Samuel encouraged it, but the hatred became mine.”
Clara appreciated truth without mistaking it for repair.
Andrew remained in another room while DNA experts studied his ancestry.
The compatibility result indicated relation to Evelyn Mason’s family, not Thomas’s.
Andrew’s biological donor came from Clara’s maternal line.
Evelyn had one older brother, David Mason, who vanished after accusing the family textile company of smuggling financial records through garment shipments.
He disappeared before Andrew’s birth.
No death certificate existed.
Patricia remembered the donor introducing himself as David.
Meridian Crown later changed the paperwork to Thomas, perhaps to create leverage.
Andrew was likely Clara’s first cousin through her mother.
The genetic distance made their relationship legally permissible in some jurisdictions but emotionally devastating for both.
Clara did not care what a statute might permit.
They needed certainty.
The full DNA comparison showed Andrew and Clara shared approximately twelve percent of genetic material.
First cousins.
Andrew sat alone in the chapel after receiving the result.
Clara found him near the abandoned altar.
The flower arch had begun losing petals.
“I loved you,” he said.
“I know.”
“Do I still?”
“That is yours to answer.”
“Do you?”
Clara looked at the marble where her dress tore.
“Love is not the only question anymore.”
Andrew’s eyes filled.
“We didn’t know.”
“No.”
“We didn’t choose this.”
“No.”
“But everything around us was arranged by people who did.”
“Yes.”
The relationship could not continue unchanged.
Neither announced a permanent decision.
Clara refused to let another emergency force one.
Daniel interrupted with news from the tunnel sensors.
The ring activation during rehearsal had partially opened the federal chamber.
Someone entered overnight through a route beneath the ballroom.
Security footage showed no surface breach.
A case had been removed.
The intruder used Andrew’s biometric code.
Andrew was with Clara when the theft occurred.

Inside the chamber, Naomi found shelves marked with family names.

Mason.
Cross.
Price.
Hundreds more.
One shelf stood empty.
EVELYN MASON—PRIMARY LEDGER.
The stolen case belonged to Clara’s mother.
Thomas had been trying to protect it.
Samuel wanted it.
Meridian Crown now possessed it.
A single file remained behind.
It contained a photograph of Evelyn standing beside David Mason and Richard Whitlock.
All three wore Meridian Crown identification badges.
Clara stared.
Her mother had not merely discovered the organization.
She had worked for it.
On the back, Evelyn wrote:
WE BUILT THE DOOR BEFORE WE UNDERSTOOD WHO WOULD WALK THROUGH IT.
The date was two years before the crash.
A second photograph showed Evelyn holding a baby.
The child was not Clara.
The name beneath it read:
ANDREW—COMPATIBILITY CANDIDATE.
Andrew looked at Clara.
Her mother had known him from infancy.
