Chapter 34 - HANNAH’S CHOICEThe underground wing had no digital entrance.

Clara opened it using the childhood key she had carried for years.

She descended with Andrew, Naomi, Helena, Patricia, and Claire. The passage beneath Rose’s cottage sloped away from the known vault and entered a corridor lined with white ceramic tiles.

Small handprints covered one wall.

Some were decades old.

Others looked recent.

Patricia stopped.

“What was this place?”

Helena answered quietly.

“Training rooms.”

They found rows of bedrooms designed to resemble different childhood homes. One contained Clara’s old wallpaper. Another copied Andrew’s boarding-school dormitory.

Rose had not merely collected information.

She had rebuilt environments so substitutes could learn memories through repetition.

At the end of the corridor, Hannah stood inside a glass laboratory.

The sixth baby slept in a carrier beside her.

Three medicine vials rested on a steel table.

Naomi approached the intercom.

“Open the door.”

“I can’t.”

Hannah displayed a metal band around her wrist.

A red light pulsed beneath her skin.

“They implanted a trigger. If I cross the doorway, the vials burn.”

Helena searched the control panel.

“Rose designed this room as a loyalty test.”

“For whom?” Clara asked.

“For replacements. One woman receives enough medicine to save either herself or the assigned child. If she chooses herself, she remains useful. If she chooses the child, Rose labels her emotionally unstable.”

Hannah laughed shakily.

“She calls compassion a defect.”

The baby began to stir.

Hannah placed one vial into the injector.

“How many children can each dose treat?” Clara asked.

“One.”

“Don’t use it yet.”

“The boy upstairs is already crashing.”

“We need the formula.”

Hannah pointed beneath the table.

A file had been taped to its underside.

Rose had expected Clara to find it.

The formula was encrypted behind a biometric command.

FIRST MOTHER AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Clara placed her hand on the scanner.

Access denied.

Helena tried.

Access denied.

Claire tried next.

Access denied.

Patricia stared at them.

“What does that leave?”

Evelyn’s voice came through Naomi’s radio.

“Me.”

Clara turned toward the camera.

Evelyn stood in the library above, watching through the security feed.

“I signed the original Mason White maternal charter,” she said. “Rose told me it was a temporary guardianship document.”

“You never mentioned it,” Clara said.

“I didn’t remember the title until I saw the symbol.”

Naomi transmitted the scanner interface upstairs. Evelyn placed her hand on a connected archive plate.

The laboratory unlocked.

But the wrist trigger on Hannah accelerated.

Thirty seconds.

Clara entered the room.

“Take the baby,” Hannah said.

Andrew lifted the carrier.

Clara reached for Hannah’s wrist.

“There’s no time,” Helena warned.

Patricia pushed past her.

“There is always time to ruin something expensive.”

She took the diamond bracelet she had worn at the interrupted wedding—the bracelet that had flashed while she tore Clara’s gown—and smashed it against the restraint.

Once.

Twice.

The bracelet broke.

The trigger remained.

Patricia seized Rosa’s sewing scissors and drove one blade beneath the metal band.

“You’ll cut her artery,” Andrew said.

“Then tell me where not to cut.”

Helena guided Patricia’s hand.

With three seconds remaining, the band snapped.

Fire erupted from the ceiling nozzles.

Naomi dragged Hannah out while Clara seized the formula file. Patricia swept the vials into her torn skirt, shielding them from the heat.

They escaped as the laboratory sealed itself.

Upstairs, Daniel transmitted the formula to federal medical centers. The compound was difficult but reproducible.

Within an hour, emergency doses were being prepared.

The first sick infant stabilized.

Hannah sat in the nursery, holding the sixth baby.

“What is his name?” Clara asked.

“They called him Asset Six.”

“That isn’t a name.”

Hannah looked down at him.

“Leo.”

“Did you choose that?”

“Yes.”

“Then Leo it is until he is old enough to choose for himself.”

Andrew watched Clara.

Rose’s plan depended on making parenthood a contest of ownership.

Clara was turning it into responsibility without possession.

Naomi entered carrying a recovered recording.

“Hannah took this from the underground server.”

Rose appeared on the screen, speaking to someone outside the frame.

“The island is expendable. Once Clara arrives, begin the second ceremony at Bellemont.”

A man answered.

The voice belonged to Daniel.

Everyone turned toward him.

Daniel stood frozen in the doorway.

“I never had that conversation.”

The recording displayed a date.

It had been made fourteen years earlier.
