Claudia had not been trying to remove Sophie so she could inherit my company.
She was not secretly poisoning her.
She had not forged custody papers.
She had not married me as part of a scheme.
The truth was smaller.
And more believable.
Claudia wanted an orderly family.
Not merely tidy.
Predictable.
She wanted Sophie to accept her authority without qualification.
She wanted me to stop interrupting discipline.
She wanted public events without meltdowns.
Family photographs where everyone looked coordinated.
Breakfast without arguments.
Hair brushed.
Dress worn.
Apology delivered.
Sophie’s resistance became, in Claudia’s mind, an attack on her legitimacy.
You’re not my mom.
Those words hurt her.
Instead of tolerating the hurt, she tried to force the role.
She repeatedly told Sophie that obedience proved respect.
She selectively reported Sophie’s worst behavior to me and minimized the context.
I, tired and traveling, accepted the summaries.
Then Claudia began invoking me when I was gone.
Daddy thinks.
Daddy wants.
Daddy agrees.
By the time she took the scissors outside, she was not thinking:
I am abusing a child.
She was thinking:
I am finally imposing a consequence Jonathan is too weak to impose.

That did not make her innocent.
It explained why she could hear a six-year-old begging and still believe she was the wronged adult.
