Chapter 22 - THE SALONThree months after the lawn, Sophie agreed to let someone touch her hair.

Not Claudia.

Not me.

A stylist named Rosa who worked with children.

Before the appointment, Sophie asked:

“Will she cut it?”

“Only if you say yes.”

“What if you say yes?”

“Still your hair.”

She stared at me.

“Really?”

There was the damage.

“Yes.”

Rosa showed Sophie every tool.

Comb.

Spray bottle.

Clips.

Scissors stayed on the counter.

“What do you want?”

Sophie touched the long side.

Then the hacked side.

“Can you make them friends?”

Rosa smiled.

“I think so.”

She trimmed the longer side into a soft chin-length bob.

No dramatic shave.

No erasing what happened.

Just balance.

Before the first cut:

“Ready?”

Sophie said:

“Wait.”

Rosa waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Then Sophie nodded.

“Okay.”

One snip.

Sophie looked at herself.

Then smiled.

I cried in a children’s salon surrounded by glitter hair clips.

May you like

Zero dignity.

Worth it.
