Chapter 1 - Just a NurseFelicity Hale rose from the head table with the confidence of a woman certain the ballroom belonged to her.

Her white satin gown shimmered beneath the towering crystal chandeliers. Pink and lavender flowers curled across the embroidered skirt, matching the enormous arrangements surrounding the gold chairs and champagne-covered tables.
She smiled at the guests, accepted the black microphone from the master of ceremonies, and turned toward the rear of the ballroom.
Toward Jenna.
Jenna Hale sat at the least desirable table, partially hidden behind a floral centerpiece. Her simple navy dress looked almost severe beside the jeweled gowns surrounding her.
She had expected to be ignored.
She had not expected to become entertainment.
Felicity pointed at her with theatrical delight.
“This is my stepsister Jenna… just a nurse.”
Laughter erupted.
Some guests laughed because Felicity was the bride.
Others laughed because Jenna’s father did.
Richard Hale threw his head back, struck the table once with his palm, and leaned toward his daughter.
“Smile, Jenna. Don’t embarrass the family tonight.”
Jenna’s cheeks burned.
Her fingers tightened around her water glass.
She had worked fourteen hours the previous night before changing clothes in the hospital locker room and rushing to Manhattan. She had held a dying teenager’s hand, stabilized a construction worker with internal bleeding, and comforted a mother whose son might never wake again.
Yet in that ballroom, Felicity had reduced her entire life to two mocking words.
Just a nurse.
Jenna placed her glass firmly on the table and rose halfway from her chair.
Her eyes glistened, but her voice remained steady.
“I save people for a living. That’s enough.”
The laughter continued for another second.
Then a champagne glass struck the table behind her.
Silas Montgomery rose so violently that his gold chair scraped across the marble floor.
The groom’s powerful father stared at Jenna as though he had seen a ghost.
“Stop laughing.”
The entire ballroom froze.
Silas stepped toward Jenna, one trembling hand raised.
“Wait… you’re the nurse who…”
He stopped.

And Felicity’s triumphant smile began to collapse.
👉 Silas had recognized Jenna from the worst night of his life—and Felicity already knew exactly what he was about to say.
