Chapter 2 - The Man Who Never ForgotSilas Montgomery had spent three years searching for a woman whose name he had never been certain he heard correctly.

Now she stood ten feet away from him.
The navy dress was different.
Her shoulder-length brunette hair was softer than it had been beneath hospital lights.
But the eyes were the same.
Calm under pressure.
Kind without weakness.
Unwilling to surrender even when everyone around her had begun preparing for loss.
Silas moved between the banquet tables.
Guests pulled their chairs back as he passed.
Jenna remained standing, confusion replacing the humiliation on her face.
“Mr. Montgomery?” she asked.
Silas stopped in front of her.
“You were at St. Catherine’s Hospital three years ago.”
Jenna’s expression shifted slightly.
She worked hundreds of emergencies every year. Some patients remained with her forever. Others blurred into faces, blood pressures, medications, and hurried prayers.
Silas continued.
“There was a highway collision during a storm. A young man came in without identification. Severe chest trauma. Internal bleeding.”
Across the ballroom, Adrian Montgomery slowly rose from the head table.
The groom’s face had gone pale.
Silas looked toward his son.
“That man was Adrian.”
A murmur moved through the guests.
Felicity lowered the microphone.
“No,” she said quickly. “Silas, you’re confused.”
Silas did not even look at her.
He stared at Jenna.
“You stood beside my son when his heart stopped.”
Jenna’s hand moved toward her mouth.
A memory returned.
A soaked black jacket cut from an unconscious patient.
A shattered watch.
A father behind the trauma-room glass, pounding the window as doctors fought to restore a heartbeat.
She remembered the young man.
She had never learned what happened after surgery.
“You were there,” Jenna whispered.
Silas nodded, tears gathering beneath his eyes.
“You refused to let them stop.”
Felicity tightened her grip around the microphone.
Adrian stared from Jenna to his bride.
Something in his expression changed when he saw Felicity’s fear.
