Chapter 7 - The Second EnvelopeSilas placed both hands on the table.

“There were two envelopes.”

Richard’s head snapped upward.

Jenna looked at him.

He had reacted before Felicity.

Silas noticed too.

“One contained the personal letter and gala invitation,” he said. “The other contained grant documents.”

Jenna’s voice came out quietly.

“What grant?”

“A five-year trauma-nursing fellowship funded through the Montgomery Foundation.”

Several guests murmured.

Silas continued.

“I asked St. Catherine’s to nominate you. The funding would have covered advanced trauma certification, graduate education, and a clinical leadership position.”

Jenna gripped the back of her chair.

Five years earlier, she had delayed graduate school because she could not afford to stop working full time.

She had taken overnight shifts, weekends, and private caregiving jobs to pay medical debt left from her mother’s final illness.

A funded fellowship would have changed everything.

“I never saw those documents,” she said.

Richard’s face had gone gray.

Silas stepped toward him.

“Did you?”

Marianne stood abruptly.

“Richard, don’t.”

Her warning confirmed the answer.

Jenna stared at her father.

“What happened to the second envelope?”

Richard rubbed one hand across his mouth.

“It required a response within ten days.”

“I know what deadlines are.”

“You were exhausted. Your mother’s bills were still unresolved. I thought adding another obligation would overwhelm you.”

Jenna’s disbelief sharpened into anger.

“So you made the decision for me?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Felicity gave a desperate laugh.

“Jenna would have turned it down anyway.”

Silas looked at her coldly.

“How would you know?”

Felicity said nothing.

Jenna’s father had not only handed Felicity the invitation.

He had allowed a life-changing opportunity to expire.

Then he had watched Jenna work double shifts and complain that she lacked ambition.

The humiliation at the wedding was no longer an isolated cruelty.

👉 The missing fellowship exposed a betrayal so deep that Jenna’s father could no longer pretend he had merely made a harmless mistake.
