Chapter 6 - The Story Felicity BorrowedAdrian stepped away from the head table.

His boutonniere trembled with his breathing.
“Tell me exactly what happened.”
Felicity glanced toward the guests.
“This is not the place.”
“You chose the place when you took the microphone.”
Her face tightened.
“I went to the gala because Jenna couldn’t.”
“Did she ask you to go?”
“No.”
“Did she know?”
Felicity said nothing.
Adrian moved closer.
“At the gala, you told me you understood what happened in the trauma room.”
“I understood enough.”
“You described my father standing behind the glass.”
Felicity looked toward Richard.
Jenna followed her gaze.
Richard had told her.
Perhaps he had read Silas’s letter aloud. Perhaps the letter included details about the night and why he wanted to thank Jenna.
Adrian continued.
“You told me a nurse stayed after her shift.”
Felicity’s voice became brittle.
“I never said that nurse was me.”
“You let me believe it.”
“I comforted you.”
“You built trust using someone else’s memory.”
The microphone lowered in Felicity’s hand.
The ballroom was so quiet that the distant wedding cake fountain could be heard circulating water.
Jenna remembered the invitation that never came.
At the time, she had assumed Silas had forgotten her.
That was normal. Families remembered doctors, surgeons, and specialists. Nurses often disappeared from the story once a patient survived.
She had accepted that.
But Felicity had not merely accepted the invitation.
She had studied it.
Borrowed its details.
Used Jenna’s kindness to create intimacy with Adrian.
Silas looked at his son.
“Did she ever tell you Jenna was the nurse?”
“No.”
Felicity suddenly shouted, “Because I didn’t know!”
Marianne closed her eyes.
Richard looked away again.
Jenna heard the lie immediately.
Felicity had known enough to mock her as “just a nurse.”

She had known exactly what profession made the stolen invitation valuable.
👉 Felicity claimed ignorance, but her mother’s terrified expression suggested the family had hidden more than one letter.
