Chapter 14 - THE THING I REMEMBERED WRONG

Memory returned in pieces.
Not like film.
Smell first.
Fresh-cut lumber.
Rain.
Caleb’s cologne.
My voice:
“You forged me.”
His:
“I saved the company.”
Then I remembered throwing papers.
A yellow folder hitting the floor.
I told Mara:
“He pushed me.”
The words felt certain.
She stopped.
“Tell me exactly what you remember.”
His hands.
My shoulders.
Falling.
Then doubt.
Was he pushing?
Or grabbing as I pulled away?
I cried.
“I don’t know.”
Mara said:
“Then don’t upgrade uncertainty because you need an answer.”
That was one of the best things anyone told me.
I changed my statement:
“I remember physical contact immediately before the fall. I cannot yet describe direction reliably.”
The defense later tried to use the change as inconsistency.
May you like
It was.
It was also honest.
