Chapter 15 - THE WORKER WHO CAME BACK
A carpenter named Luis Ortega had returned to the site at 7:35 p.m. to retrieve a compressor.
He parked around back.
He did not see the fall.
He heard us.
Rebecca:
“You don’t get to decide my money is yours.”
Caleb:
“It’s our life.”
Rebecca:
“It’s my signature.”
Then a crash.
Caleb shouting my name.
Luis ran inside.
He saw me at the bottom.
Caleb at the upper landing.
Important.
Where exactly?
“Two or three feet from the stair opening.”
Could Caleb have moved?
Yes.
Luis saw a broken temporary railing lying nearby.
Had it been installed earlier?
“Yes.”
Who removed it?
He did not know.
The site superintendent later said it had been secured that morning.
Photographs at 3:12 p.m. showed railing in place.
By 7:43, it was down.
Who removed it?
