Chapter 7 - THE GUARANTEE

The bank froze further action after my lawyer contacted them.

My lawyer became Helen Ward.

Jenna found her.

“Everyone in crisis needs a Helen,” she said.

Apparently.

The guarantee used my electronic signature.

Collateral disclosure referenced my Bend cabin.

Not directly pledged yet.

But my net worth was used to strengthen Caleb’s business credit.

“What happens if the company defaults?”

Helen answered:

“The bank could pursue guarantors under valid documents.”

“Valid.”

“Yes.”

“Is it?”

“We investigate.”

Caleb’s company carried significant debt.

Material prices.

Two failed developments.

A lawsuit.

Cash flow.

I had known business was strained.

Not this.

The guarantee request originated from Caleb’s office.

Electronic signature applied from our home IP.

My authentication code went to my phone.

But I had not entered it.

“How could he?”

Shared passwords.

Synced tablet.

Message preview.

We lived together.

Security built for strangers often fails against spouses with access.

Helen found something else.

Two days after my fall, Caleb requested a $210,000 draw on the business credit line.

Approved based partly on my guarantee.

While I was intubated.

Money went to overdue suppliers and a tax payment.

Not a yacht.

Not an affair.

A failing business.

Ordinary desperation can still produce extraordinary betrayal.
