Chapter 18 - THE RECOVERED AUDIO

Video was gone.
Audio survived.
The camera installer had configured a separate microphone diagnostic stream retained longer than video.
Seventeen minutes.
Mostly wind.
Footsteps.
Our argument.
My own voice made me shake.
“You signed my name.”
CALEB:
I authorized what we already agreed.
ME:
I never agreed to guarantee eight hundred seventy-five thousand dollars.
CALEB:
You said keep the business alive.
ME:
That is not the same thing.
Then:
I’m calling Helen tomorrow.
I had already known her from Dad’s estate.
Caleb:
If you call a lawyer, the bank freezes us.
Me:
Good.
Long silence.
Then Caleb:
You would destroy thirty employees to prove a point?
Me:
You did this.
Footsteps.
Me:
Don’t touch me.
Then movement.
Caleb:
Rebecca, stop.
Me:
Let go.
A sharp scrape.
Then my scream.
The crash.
Luis running.
Caleb shouting:
“Jesus Christ.”
The audio answered one question.
May you like
He was touching me.
It did not prove exactly how I went over.
